Neutramigen causing wind

Hi, I posted on the childbirth forum a few weeks ago about my LO losing 2lbs the week after he was born and not regaining it in any hurry (he is almost 6 weeks). After various tests coming back negative, the doctor thinks the lack of gain could be down to Cows Milk intolerance. DS had been on SMA lactose free since week one as his older brother was diagnosed as lactose intolerant at 3 months after a nightmare with colic etc. The doctor moved him onto SMA high energy middle of last week - he lasted 36 hours and projectile vomited all over the house. Then moved him onto Neutramigen. First 48 hours were ok although he seemed to have a little more wind and be less comfortable than on the SMA. Then fast forward another 48 hours and he is screaming the house down after every week, really unsettled at night, and belching like a builder when the wind eventually comes up. He screamed for 3 hours after his bottle yesterday afternoon. Has anyone else had this reaction to Neutramigen? The thing is, he does seem to be clocking up the weight again since hes started it - hes put on 9ox in 5 days so there must be something in the CMP allergy. We moved him back onto the SMA Lactose free at 6pm yesterday until we can speak to the dietician as couldn't bear to see him in any more pain - and hes been grand all night - no wind, no screaming, restful and content... Has anyone else had any similar experiences? Grateful for any advice - thanks

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. Unfortunately I can't help much as a combination of eliminating all dairy from my diet (breast milk) andy Nutramigen worked a treat for my DD.

It does however seem to be odd that the SMA made him more comfortable than the Nutramigen if it really is a CMP allergy/intolerance. What about reflux? I am not 100% sure but the Nutramigen seems to be a bit 'thinner' than other formulas? Could it have been coming back up and upsetting him? Although I don't think this would cause wind.

thanks for your response. It does all seem very odd - it seems unlikely that hes just putting on the weight now and its not down to the nutramigen (he barely put on 9oz in the previous 3 weeks - and has put this on in 5 days on nutramigen). We did also swop to level 2 teats on dr browns bottles at the same time and I wonder if this is causing/ exaggerating the problem - it hadn't occurred to me that the Neutramigen was thinner so it might be flowing through the teats too easily - not sure this would cause wind but will try swopping back...
