Hives and swollen eye on one side of the face. No idea what is triggering it.

Twice in the last month 5yo DS has suddenly come up in hives and a puffy, itchy eye for no obvious reason Confused. On one occasion he was sitting on the sofa and the other was the train, I can't see any link with what he may have touched or eaten.

He has severe allergies to nuts & kiwi (and epi-pens) but since the initial diagnosis 2yrs ago (and awareness of what to avoid) I have never needed to use any of his kit, no Piriton, nothing.

Can hayfever / pollens cause hives? It only happens on one side of his face. I'm baffled.

Have to post and run as we're off out but will check back later.

Did he lean his cheek on the seats. Where the seats leather or fabrics? then, it is probably contact from somethings: cleaning product, leather/fabrics dye, dust mites,...

No just normal fabric train seats. And the fabric sofa he sits on every day.

I suppose he could have touched a trace of kiwi or nut on the train. It's just weird that it's happened twice.

we have swelling and hives just from severe enviromental allergies. Does he take a daily antihistamine?
what enviromental allergies does he have?

Meglet · 28/05/2012 11:22

eragon No environmental allergies. Just food.

He was diagnosed with kiwi and nut allergies. That's it. No asthma or excema either. And not a problem in 2 years, never needed to use any antihistamine at all.

I might get in touch with the allergy team and see what they say. And carry on googling!

he may of developed enviro allergies, (my daughter has in her teens), and as you have kiwi allergy, may be linked to tree pollen.

Could it be something got into his eye causing it to get puffy. if the eye watered then maybe the tears washed out the allergen which then caused his cheek to react?

Hayfever is really bad at the moment so maybe he needs to be tested for pollen.

Hope you find the cause soon.
