Hi, I am new to MN but my Dr suggested coming onto a forum for any advice/tips from anyone!

My LO is now 8 1/2 months. I exclusively breast fed until he was 6 months old and then started weaning him. My initial plan was to stop BF at 6 months and change to formula. However ............ we have had lots of problems.

I initially gave him baby porridge mixed with formula (my boobs do not agree with expressing), along with simple fruit and veg and he started itching and sneezing. I first thought that it could be an allergy to certain plants as I have severe hay fever so I removed them all and it carried on. His reactions got worse and worse until one day he came up in a severe rash, his eyes became puffy, he had black eyes and he itched and sneezed. He had had baby porridge mixed with formula!

I took him to the Dr in Feb and he referred me to a paediatrician.... it is now May and my appointments is still not for another 4 weeks.

I decided that I would keep trying him with a variety of foods and try and work things out myself ........ this has become very confusing and I still have no idea what he is allergic to!

He has always had eczema but since weaning it has become 100 times worse and seems to differ in severity according to what he has eaten.

We were away for bank holiday weekend and I gave him a weetabix with a few drops of cow?s milk on, scrambled eggs and beans - he came out in a rash and had black bags under his eyes. I put this down to the beans. The next day I gave him weetabix with a drop of milk again and he had a severe reaction and I was very close to calling 999. He swelled up, had black bags under his eyes, a huges rash all over him and then he vomited quite a bit! Obviously cow?s milk but then he has been OK with yoghurts and cheese in the past???!!!!!!

He has had quite a few reactions since the first one but they seem to be happening more and more often. He also seems to get two different types of reactions (maybe all part of the same one but not sure). Strawberries made him come out in really bad hives all over his body and tomatoes seem to make him really itchy and rashy. I THINK some dairy produce cause him to become puffy, swollen and all the other symptoms I first mentioned.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?? HELP!!!

Hello. I'm sorry to hear your ds is having these reactions.

Do you give your ds piriton after a reaction? If not ask your gp for some asap.

In terms of the foods he's had, could it be wheat that is the problem had he had that before?

Its worth only trying a new food every 3 days and keeping a diary.

Have you been referred to an allergy clinic? if not ask your gp to refer you to a peadiatric allergist. The AllergyUK helpline can give you details of ones near you so you could the tell the GP which one you want. Keep the appt you have but request the one to see an allergist.

If your DS has had dairy before then I'd be surprised if he was reacting to that. Eggs could be a problem as could beans. Strawberries are high in histamine and alot of people can react to them. Tomatos are the same.

sorry for my rambling reply. I do ferl for you both. my DD was 6.5 months when she had her firdt reaction to a baby rusk. We were the same as you and found that weaning was difgicult as she seemed to react to pretty much everything we tried.

Good luck with things and def call the allergy UK helpline. they are brilliant!
