Don't think nutramigen is 'working'

I'd appreciate your thoughts. Ds has non IgE allergies to cmp and soya. He has been bf until now at 10 mths. I have just started him on nutramigen and noticed his stools are quite loose and today he has awful nappy rash, having never been sore before, at all.

I spoke to the wonderful dietician who is helping us and she has suggested neocate LCP next.

I wondered if this had happened to anyone else? He has also started waking again at night. Been on nutramigen for about 5 days.

Any thoughts or experiences appreciated.

I just BF my DS2 till he was 20 months old as he didn't like nurtamigen. But I find he has loose stools anyway as a result of his allergies I assume.

DS is allergis to CMP, he came out in massive hives after his first try of Nutramigen. It is still made from cow's milk, but altered somehow(don't know the technicalities!). He didn't react to Neocate, but we couldn't get him to drink it so I just bf him until he was 2!

Hi and yes, DS2 had huge reaction to cows milk at 8 months, after 5 days on nutramigen and still severe symptoms the hospital changed to neocate and it worked within 24 hrs a happier baby, on the nutramigen he was waking hourly and clearly in pain....so do try it, they also tried him on gaviscon for possible silent reflux which can go hand in hand with CMPI and lactose intolerance....

Thanks for quick replies. I'd love to keep bf-ing, it's been a tough decision but I am not doing great on such a restricted diet; I am also vegetarian. I feel like I've done it long enough and can't jeopardise my own health. Feel dreadful now though as he is not doing well. I am still bf-ing but just winding it down.

Nutramigen has the proteins all broken down (effectively pre-digested, which is why its bitter like vomit!), so they are not the same shape as those the body reacts to. I think neocate is even more broken down. He is drinking it but not thrilled about it Sad

I'mnotansweringit try not to feel guilty about breastfeeding, you should be proud for what you have achieved already, 10 months is amazing and you should be proud of a great start you have given your DS....

I bf my first till 7 months then he developed the cows milk allergy felt awful in had stopped, but he continued to thrive on the nutramigen and the cuddles at bedtime continued x moving on to bottle feeing, is just that moving on, not moving away...

My second son I was determined to Bf till 1 year, but he developed a CMPI allergy too and I found the restricted diet hard, and with two children etc etc the Bf journey stopped at 8 months, he then moved onto Neocate, although I've failed my year target especially with the knowledge of DS1, but the fact is the allergy is there not because I stopped Bf, it just is there, so I'm at peace now and the bottle feeding has fallen into a good rhythem of 4 bottles a day and no night feeds.... :)

I hope your son improves on the neocate and you see a difference quickly :)

Thank you. Feeling a bit emotional about it as he doesn't really like the formulas and knowing it has upset him too Sad

Got Neocate today so will see how he does on it. Thanks again for advice and kind words. blogging you did great too, it's not easy. You sound really positive, well done.

imnotanswering please don't feel guilty about giving up breastfeeding!! It's so hard being on a restricted diet and you have done so well to do it as long as you have!!! I didn't mean my post to sound like I thought you should keep bfing Blush. Sorry!

trixy it's ok it wasn't your fault Smile I just feel a bit sad about it as fed ds1 for longer and never so much as expressed so it's all such a new world to me. On a positive he has had the neocate this afternoon and evening and seems so settled again...

My friend's DS was put on nutrimagen but he didn't like the taste and gagged.

She also tried aptamil pepti which caused explosive nappies. She was warned with this one that stools would be green, loose and more frequent so might be similar with nutrimagen?

He is now settled on pepti junior which is cow and soy milk protein free and also lactose free. Might be worth asking to try it?

I have also heard of neocate, but don't know anyone who has tried it.
