Thinking of getting a dog, DS and I are both allergic to cats though...

I'm allergic to both, some dogs I'm not allergic to though (the ones which don't shed hair IYKWIM).

I'm only allergic to our cat, never had a problem with the dogs.

AmberLeaf · 27/04/2012 13:35

Im allergic to both, but found over time that I got 'used' to my cats and symptoms werent so bad.

Some dog fur sets me off more than others too.

Dee03 · 27/04/2012 13:36

Im allergic to cats and rabbits a lot.....and only certain dogs it seems.....yet i have 4 cats and 2 dogs Grin

DSIS is, DDad only cats.

DSIS says some dogs are worse than others.

typicalvirgo · 27/04/2012 13:41

No, not typically.

I don't know if this is actually correct but I was told it is the protein in a cats saliva that is thought to be the problem with starting allergies off and as they are always washing themselves and keeping themselves therein lies the problem as their fur is constantly lost.

Dogs on the other hand are just dirty buggers and only lick their bums and shed their hair periodically.

Go and visit the local pets home/ rescue centre and see what happens Grin.

My dad was allergic to rabbits and dogs but grew out of a cat allergy that he had as a child.

I think it depends on the person. I am allergic to anything furry - so cats dogs rabbits guinea pigs etc., much to the DC's disgust as we have fish as a result.
DH however is bad with cats as it triggers his asthma, but as far as we know ok with other animals as he used to have pets as a child.
