My DS has a milk protein allergy. He's coming up to his first birthday Smile and I'd like to make him a cake but can't find a recipe! Has anyone got any suggestions?

There are cake recipes that might be appropriate on this website: dairyfreecooking.about.com. Hope this helps!

Can you not just replace the butter with a dairy free margarine?

just substitute butter with a dairy free alternative such as Pure spread. You don't need to have to do anything different to a normal cake recipe :).

the only thing I find is the Pure spread makes quite soft buttercream so I use part Pure and part Stork (the hard type in the gold foil wrapper not the 'spread' in the carton) to give it a bit more definition.

Most supermarkets sell cake decorations and Dr Oetker (sp?) sprinkles etc are generally dairy free. Tesco and Waitrose (and probably others) sell dairy free chocolate buttons in their free from aisle (Tesco also sell white buttons) and you can use Kinnerton chocolate for cooking.

Most of the ready coloured fondant icing that you get from cake suppliers (just google them) is dairy free although isn't guaranteed nut free. just be careful of the iced cake decorations that you can get as a lot of them contain milk protein and not all cake supply websites list all the ingredients.

Other than that have fun creating a great bithday cake - it can definitely be done!

Thank you everyone - I really must do a few practice runs and tastings. This is absolutely not and excuse to stuff myself full of cake Grin.
