Just had a major brainwave. Can't believe I'd never thought of this before!!

My kids are allergic to egg and milk. It's my birthday today and I was thinking of something I can put candles on as I don't have time to bake a cake.

I use vegan recipe websites for cake and dessert recipes, but it had never occurred to me that vegan cafes probably sell cakes.

I googled to find one near me and the kids are currently tucking into egg and dairy free coconut and lime cake.

We're going to go back as they do vegan ice cream sundaes. I'm really excited, the kids will be over the moon to have ice cream out somewhere.

That's so lovely. Dh has to have gluten free and once we found a veggie/healthfood shop on holiday that did loads of gluten free pasties, cakes etc.

It's quite sad that something other parents take for granted has the capacity to make us so excited.

It reminds me of when we were in Rome, DH and I hadn't had any ice cream all holiday because DS couldn't eat it. On the last night we decided to indulge and somehow managed to choose an ice cream shop that sold rice milk ice cream. I nearly cried because we could all have ice cream.

Ooooh. Genius. Must go and google for vegan places near me. Happy birthday!
