negative RAST again

Hi, thanks for all the advice over the past few months.

DS RAST tests have come back from the consultant as negative to grass pollen and house dust mites. The letter says his IgE is not particulary elevated - but doesn't say what it is. (last time 14 with is normal)

I've been asked to keep a diary of reactions including if he's hot/cold, exercised, where he is/been etc.

I feel like I'm going mad. Everyone who looks at the picture of DS (inc GP, school nurse, consultant) says what a bad reaction it was but it seems he's not allergic to anything.

Consultant has said 'significant allergic symptoms' in the letter. Any ideas what that could mean?

TIA

Thanks pixie that was a really interesting website. Only thing that doesn't strike with DS is the fact he eats loads of cheese, chocolate and chicken and is OK but tomato ketchup is a trigger for him - but not beans/pizza, so other tomato based products.

Last year he suffered terrible hayfever and was diagnosed by the GP, hence why grass pollen was tested. I do wonder if there could be other pollen type allergens that are triggering him. So far since his severe reaction last November he has been fine - which is even more confusing as up til then he seemed to be getting worse and worse symptoms.

Hows DD2?

oh maybe about pizza and beans - although I just presumed it was tomato puree on a pizza? (even the cheap ones I buy!)

The consultant has written significant allergic symptoms - any idea what this means.

Glad DD2 is getting better. Best of luck for the GOSH apt - I really hope she is able to come off the oxygen.

Ds was allergic to eggs (also nuts, house dust mite, some animals and now pollens) from weaning as a baby.

At 7 yrs, he had at least a year when he tested negative on the RAST for egg but had a significant reaction to his skin prick testing.

He is now able to eat eggs wito any problem.

So, it is possible to test negative on RAST yet still show allergic symptoms.

Has your dc had skin prick tests?

heliumballoons · 02/04/2011 21:26

Not had skin prick tests. Had reaction (just skin) to ketchup from a young child and just avoided it until one day he had it and got very bad facial reaction and complained of having a very dry throat and so I saw GP and got cons referral. Had RAST to tomato and peanut but negative. Kept having allergic symptoms last year then had the bad reaction with swollen lips and rapid breathing/ tight throat - so went back to cons via gp. Now has epi-pens and had test to grass and house dust mites because of hayfever and because we were at home when bad reaction happened.

I obviously do not want DS to have allergies - I keep thinking what could have been the problem last year then, but I know he was really bad as I rang OOH GP who rang back in 2 minutes after I'd described his symptoms to receptionist (usual time 2 hours!).

I guess now I just need/ want answers to be able to move on - should I request skin prick tests maybe?

Oh sorry pixie that last post is incredibly selfish after everything you, DD and your family have been through. Blush

Just sounding off really.

Thanks pixie. I have cons pead in August and will ask then about skin prick. He is ok atm so just waiting to see what the summer months bring. If its the same as last year we have a starting point for tests.
