Hi I am a regular poster on MN but this is my first venture in Allergies!

DS (14 months) seems to have develop a reaction to tomatos recently and presents with the following:

  • rash around the mouth
  • horrendous nappy rash that doesnt respond to nappy cream (after a dirty nappy the next day)
  • disturbed nights sleep(wakes up screaming and inconsolable)
  • refusing food that is tomato based - unheard of as he rarely refuses anything!!!

GP has advised cutting out tomatos for 6 months and see what happens but this is all new to me - I am hoping its something he will grow out of - so any advice/words of wisdom would be gratefully recieved!

My daughter had tomato allergy for a number of years and has now grown out of it (she's 9 now and still has other serious allergies)

You might find there's a dose level issue i.e. is ok with small amounts, has a reaction with more. My daughter couldn't eat fresh tomato or tomato soup, but she could eat spaghetti bolognaise with some tomato puree in it

I'd go with the GP - avoid for a while, then try small amounts of cooked/processed tomato.

Thank you for your reply! I am just starting to realise how much I use tomatoes in! Hopefully it is just a blip although he has had terrible nappy rash again today and wouldn't sit down all afternoon. :(
