Need your experience knowledge. Allergy to bisto?

My daughter is 15months and appears to have multiple allergies including cows milk, red lentils, peas, lactose intolerance (and god only knows what else)! We are waiting to be seen at the allergy clinic.

Anyway long story short, I gave her mince and potatoes tonight which had bisto powder in it. She has had bisto before but in a smaller quantity. About one hour later she developed extremely red skin around her mouth and her exzema on her fingers flared up.

Previous to this she also had some raisons but she has had these before without a reaction. Dont have a clue what has caused this as the box on the bisto powder does not say milk, only says it was made in a factory containing milk powder! Any ideas are welcome!

is there any celery in there?

I was going to say celery- it is used in a lot of stocks.

Dont think she has ever had celery. Is a celery allergy common? I cant understand why she was able to tolerate the bisto the last time I gave her it though. Last time it was 2 teaspoonfuls added to stew. This time it was about 4 tablespoonfuls added to mince. Do you think quantity would make a difference? (Stupid question) Think we are gonna have a fun few years trying out different foods!

To date, we have limited her diet as we have been aware of her difficulties with diary, she also has difficulties with lumps so hasn't had breads etc. (Vomits at lumps)

and to add another poss problem, my son has reactions to yeast extract as its high in histamine and can cause problems for some.

the list of questions for your allergy clinic appointment , must be getting long!

Was it Bisto original or Bisto granules?
the original has pretty straight forward ingedients - the granules are a bit of a mixed bag...!

Bisto original! To top it all off, I was at DD G.P's today and he is off the opinion that she should no longer be getting lactose free milk on prescription. Now I know that she is 15 months, however she loves her milk and i cannot give her anything else. He then said that it can be purchased over counter. Again, fair enough! However, I feel that if a child genuinely has health issues then they should be entitled to this on prescription. Long story short, he agreed to continue giving it to us until she is seen at the allergy clinic. Am I being greedy? Just feel that the health service has let us down a bit since she was born. They failed to give us much help regarding her feeding, even though she was lactose intolerant, had severe reflux etc. Then they failed to diagnose her dislocated hip, resulting in her going into a body cast for 3 months and a brace for another 3. Maybe I'm being selfish, but I nearly feel they owe us one!

I was going to suggest celery - its quite a common allergy.

As regards lactose free milk - by all means continue to fight your GP for prescription, but if you're not successful lactofree is widely available in supermarkets

Lactofree milk is an alternative - myself and DH have it as I have a lactose intolerance (not allergy just get the swollen tummy and horrific runs!) you can also have gruyere I think and a couple of other cheeses as they are lactose free - look on the lactofree website though and any other regarding lactose intolerance.

We can't give egg allergic Ds1 Bisto as it contains E322 whic can be derived(sp?) from egg so thats another posibility.

Shes ok with wheat I presume? Normal bisto has wheat in and my son can't have it. He can have bisto best though. This certainly doesnt have wheat and so may be worth a look as it may have less other stuff in it as well

DS2 can't have Bisto as it contains Soya, which I think may be the same 'family' as peas. Could that be it?

Reactions are more evident on 2nd exposure, which would explain why you're seeing it now.

IMO wouldn't give it to a dog let alone a child, the salt content, msg. hydrogenated fat, colouring, the 'meat' content is mrm; scraped from the abattoir walls ,floor etc. Yum

Could it be potato rather than bisto, which contains potato starch anyway?

Potato and pea allergies sometime occur together.
