Dry January 2022

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 12/12/2021 09:25

Did Dry January this year and we had an amazing little support group going on here and I wondered if anyone cared to join me next year? This time I'm hoping to stay dry longer - 100 days - but will see how January goes first. I don't want to set myself up to fail.

Who's with me?

@Daffyaboutdaffs I feel the same. Had moments in the past where I know I need to stop then convinced myself I'm fine but this time it has to be the last

Upyouranty · 30/12/2021 08:59

@gertie445

I’m exactly the same - I’ve drank a bottle of wine in the time it’s taken my dh to drink two beers.
The other night I was very worried about my teen who doesn’t really drink and she seemed very unusually drunk. I did not like seeing it, it scared me. Is that how she feels when seeing me?
A switch changed. Not anymore.

MavisMile · 30/12/2021 09:03

Thanks! I've been here before. Actually gave up for about 20 months a few years ago (with the help of MN) then went down the path of thinking I can moderate.

At the moment, I just want to give up for January.

Usually have 2 days off a week, but the past couple of months has been creeping up and I've really had enough. Just know it's tough, but it can be done.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 30/12/2021 09:23

Has anyone else reached the point of thinking alcohol really is poison? I had a hangover (on three glasses of red wine) back in late September and it's that that really made me think it was time to limit consumption.

Well done to those who've started Dry January early.

PrisonerofZeroCovid · 30/12/2021 09:30

I'm in. Have signed up to the OYNB 90 day challenge with a view to going alcohol free long term but Dry Jan is as far as I can really think right now, given I can't really remember the last day I didn't drink. Not a binger, don't get fall down drunk anymore, but I reckon I nail minimum of 30 units a week no problem, mostly wine and fizz. Got worse since Covid. Did Dry Jan last year pretty successfully as I had a big race coming up. Did the race 5 Feb. Celebrated with a bottle of champagne- haven't looked back since. Dry July and Sober October weren't even considered!

Another morning feeling tired, bloated, hungover. During the day I am strong thinking nope wont drink tonight. Then before I know it, I am drinking and the cycle continues. I stopped for three months last year and one of the things I done at the beginning was to go to bed really early. Going to start doing that again rather than watching tv, will go to bed and read.

Feeling sorry for myself this morning. How did I end up like this?

Yes I have now. With the help of a book I've been reading.

FoxglovesandBees · 30/12/2021 10:19

@teaandtoastwithmarmite Is that The Naked Mind book that's making you see it as poison? I must give it a read. I feel like I know intellectually that alcohol is poison but emotionally I'm still so attached to it, if you know what I mean? Confused

Welcome to all the new joiners, we don't need to ever feel those crappy sick hungover feelings again, we can do this together!

Letsrunabath · 30/12/2021 10:22

My husband and I are doing Dry January as a health kick, will need lots of support not to cave in.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/12/2021 11:11

@FoxglovesandBees yes it is that book. Honestly I've had it on my kindle for ages and wish I'd read it before. Going to a party tonight and although it's not far I'm driving. My friend said 'are you not drinking then?' I just said 'no lol' and am giving blood later so will just say it's that

Youngatheart00 · 30/12/2021 11:15

Another morning hungover for me too. Now going to waste most of today. Feel awful.

Can’t wait to stop.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 30/12/2021 11:22

I can't speak for @teaandtoastwithmarmite but I reached that point of view myself after one hangover too many (which made me feel totally a wreck!). It has really helped me over the past couple of months. I have found early to bed helps me massively swerve temptation too. Doing something creative is also a good distraction.

IcedAbstinente · 30/12/2021 11:26

I am writing thank you notes for the Dcs instead of drinking tonight. I know they ought to be doing it... but needs must. Grin

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/12/2021 12:00

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I only need a couple of drinks these days and I have horrid hangovers. Pretty sure it's my body begging me not to do it anymore. I can handle not drinking at home etc it's when I go out with people and they're all drunk and I just want to go home where the issue is but I'd rather that than have everyone laughing at me and hating me the next day

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/12/2021 12:01

I am tired of being the 'entertainment' Sad

Lushmetender · 30/12/2021 12:26

I had another AF night last night and feel tired but good. I did drink the night before yesterday and had Af the night before. Call it training. Going out for dinner tonight and new year will be quiet! Challenge will be the first week until get into the swing!

FoxglovesandBees · 30/12/2021 14:08

@teaandtoastwithmarmite I've had it for a couple of years on my Kindle too and never looked at it. Will put it next on my list. Good luck at your party tonight, driving sounds like a good plan

Alcemeg · 30/12/2021 15:56

DH and I did NYE early last night, so that we have time to recover for the start of all our new year's fitness plans this weekend!

Drank waaaaaay too much wine and got pretty wrecked. Today I feel as though I've been run over by a bus. Our activities are, let's say, extremely limited today. Even watching a light movie is a bit difficult for my brain to keep up with!

Alcohol is definitely poison, it's the "toxic" in "intoxicated". How perverse is it that we feel relieved to have got the celebrations out of the way?! Urgh, I can't wait to start feeling good again!

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 30/12/2021 15:56

I have decided to replace alcohol with afternoon tea and milkshakes (hence the name change).

Also- my hair is noticeably thinning. I am at the start of menopause to be fair, but am hoping that boosting my vitamin intake and stoppig alcohol which deplest nutrients will help. :)

Thank you.

Stuckhere2021 · 30/12/2021 16:18

Day 5 for me. I am a hard core binge drinker /alcohol abuser. I’ve upset my friends and family so many times that not completely DJ is not an option for me. I will likely need to be AF for life but as others have said, that is a scary thought so I am thinking do DJ then maybe aim for 100 days then see how I feel about drinking. Really hoping I will reset my neural pathways and stop craving alcohol. Good luck to everyone and looking forward to us all supporting each other ❤️💪

Crunchymum · 30/12/2021 20:44

I'm reporting for duty.

Am so fecking sick of drinking, yet I continue with it.

I do DJ every year (I'm particularly proud of January 2021 as I was WFH / homeschooling / mere months on from my mum's sudden death)

January is never enough for a true reset for me so I'm aiming for 100 days and will see where I am at. I want to learn who I really am without drinking.

OverByYer · 30/12/2021 21:07

I don't drink every night, but binge at the weekends, and the last year weekends start earlier, sometimes as early as Wednesday and last until Sunday evening. I am healthy in all other aspects of my life, eat well and exercise. I want to experience a weekend without a hangover.
