Dry January 2022

Did Dry January this year and we had an amazing little support group going on here and I wondered if anyone cared to join me next year? This time I'm hoping to stay dry longer - 100 days - but will see how January goes first. I don't want to set myself up to fail.

Who's with me?

Morning, happy Friday- I hope! Thanks for the support last night, I weathered the storm and although was still awake at 3am as is the case I guess whilst I'm edging out the old and trying to start a new I feel brighter this morning than I have all week. It's day 6 for me. I'm gonna go and treat myself to some new makeup this morning before the weekend slog!

JaquiRussell · 07/01/2022 09:30

Day 7. Sleep is still awful but feeling better in the mornings despite that.
Looking forward to waking up tomorrow without the beer fear. Already have a Saturday under the belt due to last weekend, we've got this!!

Alcemeg · 07/01/2022 09:43

Happy Friday everyone! I'm enjoying the ride. I'm combining DJ with the 5:2 diet, as intermittent fasting intensifies the health benefits and also puts me off drinking pointless calories, even on non-fasting days.

I do have a bottle of rose in the fridge that I've had an occasional glass of, over the course of the week. Doing the 5:2 diet has made me much more conscious of what's going down my neck, so it's altered my mindset from "oooh look, I just opened a bottle of wine, this is glass #1, here goes, who knows where this will end" to "here's one glass of wine to enjoy tonight, let's savour it slowly." I can honestly say I get more pleasure out of that than guzzling.

Fitness stuff is helping, e.g. this: www.onebodyla.com/newyearchallenge

Hope I'm not sounding too smug. I'm finding it fairly easy now to adjust my habits like this, but there have been times in the past when it was much more difficult. I remember one particular very unhealthy relationship, years ago, when my day used to start with a glass of wine and a fag, and I reached a point where I just could not imagine doing things any differently. I felt helpless and lost. The first step of course was to LTB 😛 but then setting up new habits is not as hard as it seems, if you insist on it to yourself. You just have to be consistent for a week or so and then it all starts to come more naturally.

Very impressed by PPs who have managed to get through stressful situations without pushing that "ah, fuck it" button.

So, here we all are, Week 1. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again!" 😊

Good Morning DJers!

Just seen a post in Chat where someone said they too are attempting DJ and are waking up "feeling hungover, headache, fuzzy head and just so tired".

I am sleeping so deeply but also waking up dog tired & heavy headed. Thankfully no constipation Grin but did have a huge sugar dip yesterday afternoon - was suddenly visibly shaking - reaches for Cake !!!

Roll on Day 7!

dementedma · 07/01/2022 09:59

Day 7 and finally starting to feel a bit better. Sleep still broken but feel clear headed and definitely less bloated. Nearly one week done!

H1Drangea · 07/01/2022 10:23

Hallo Day 7 !
Slept really well ( thanks Pukka Nighttime ) but still woke up with a dry mouth and have drunk 4 large glasses of water ( as well as 3 black coffees )
I am starting to feel really well , somehow my eyes feel clearer (?)
I’ll look back at the photos on my phone from over Christmas and take a new one , to see if there is a difference , I hope so

IJustLovePirates · 07/01/2022 10:40

My night out get cancelled so didn’t have the temptation. Still felt a little bit irritable though being Friday night in Oz. I know I’ll appreciate it tomorrow morning which will be the start of Day 7

Heard my boss say today “Haven’t had a drink in 6 days” so I think he’s doing it too 😁

Hope everyone has a great weekend

pointythings · 07/01/2022 10:58

Slept like a log and it looks as if the central heating is finally sorted thanks to electrician intervention.

Now to get the Plymouth and back run out of the way and the world is my oyster on Sunday!

SarahJessicaParker1 · 07/01/2022 11:40

Day 7 here. Feeling fine. Got some nice drinks arriving in online shop - posh kombucha and keffir. Hoping that will be good for me and prevent wine cravings. Kombucha tastes quite grown up imo, so a good alternative

Lushmetender · 07/01/2022 11:48

Day 7 here. A late Christmas hamper arrived from a friend with Prosecco and port in it last night 🙁. Used to be a time I could not have any alcohol in the house as it was drunk but keep it there to see if it lasts the distance. Needed another cocodamol to sleep but it’s the weekend now so if I don’t sleep too well I can lie in a bit. Still feels like a long way to go but as you say should take it day by day.

MajorityofThree · 07/01/2022 11:52

Day7 amazing!!! Waking up with a headache but that's after sleeping solidly through the night which is brilliant and unheard of. Off to first PT session of the year with new trainer so hoping that will be a boost too as eating way too much sugar. Much more energy overall

Iamblossom · 07/01/2022 14:33

Made it through the cinema last night, one that had a bar, my companions each had a glass of wine and I had a becks Blue. Was shocked at the calories in a j20 so won't be having those.
West Side story was beautiful, recommend.

Now in fracture clinic with ds1 who has broken his wrist and can't ski with us next month if we manage to go around covid, so that's pretty gutting.

I have bough AF brew dog, becks Blue, san Miguel and white wine in tescos this morning, will feedback...

I literally can't remember a Friday I did not drink alcohol, bar my two pregnancies, so fingers crossed...

Oooh good choices @Iamblossom - the same Miguel is fab I think (as is brew dog).

canyon2000 · 07/01/2022 15:14

@Iamblossom I have just been for a pub lunch with my friend and I had a bottle of San Miguel 0 - very nice!!

H1Drangea · 07/01/2022 15:16

@Iamblossom I saw West Side Story before Christmas, what a lovely film ! The cinematography was amazing ( ❤️ the singing , and I want a swishy dress so I can sing America ! Everything’s free in America! )
I think what made me cry ( even more ) was I knew there wasn’t going to be a happy ending

AlbertBridge · 07/01/2022 16:19

@Alcemeg

I do have a bottle of rose in the fridge that I've had an occasional glass of, over the course of the week.

I hope I don't sound really mean, but you're not doing DJ if you're still drinking wine! The point is to not drink any booze at all. Is it alcohol-free wine?

AlbertBridge · 07/01/2022 16:21

@H1Drangea

thanks Pukka Nighttime

Ok, I'm running out to buy some of this right now! I love Sainsburys Nighttime tea (it tastes like lavender, which is unexpectedly lush) but don't have any on at the moment. I'm still struggling to sleep before 1am so I need some help!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/01/2022 16:33

DD loves the original West Side Story but has vetoed the recent adaptation because of Ansel Elgort's questionable reputation with underage girls.

I'd find it very difficult to resist alcohol if I knew there was some in the house unless it's chardonnay which I loathe. So well done those of you who really are resisting nearby alcohol tempation!

That's quite a stash there @Iamblossom - enjoy!

madmumofteens · 07/01/2022 16:57

Day 7 and finding it ok so far also trying to lose weight and finding I'm craving sweet things!! Also anyone else find watching people on TV drinking makes you want to have a drink to join them lol x

Oh dear, you're right!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!

There was me thinking I was making great progress. No wonder I'm not finding it hard 😂

Daisy829 · 07/01/2022 17:02

Just refound this thread as it disappeared for some reason. I’m on day 7 & really enjoying it. My sleep is a bit crap and I didn’t associate it with DJ so interesting that others are experiencing that too. My skin is looking so much better though and I’m definitely feeling better in myself. Night out tonight but I’m driving. Good luck for the weekend everyone.

guineapigs · 07/01/2022 17:38

Well tonight I really fancy a beer. Even Dh, who doesn't drink too much, admitted that he really fancies one. But we resisted the temptation.

Iamblossom · 07/01/2022 17:43

Had a glass of the sauvignon so far, yes I know, it's 5.42, I would deffo be drinking proper wine by now on a Friday though... Its very sweet but drinkable, deffo better than the red I have tried before.

The San Miguel is really good, my fave so far.

Day 7, wow, go us.

😂 😂 😂

You've come a really long way from starting the day with a glass and a fag, so let's not lose sight of that!

Mybestyear · 07/01/2022 17:45

Hi all DJers - sounds like people are doing well on the whole. Today I am day 7 DJ/day 12 AF. Managed past day 10 easily - this is around the time I normally cave and go on a bender. Was at the shops today and wasn’t even tempted to buy booze even though I’m mostly home alone today and tomorrow and nobody would know. I actually felt a bit yuk at the thought of wine/vodka which is a first for me. Listening to This Naked Mind and Alcohol Explained on audible and doing the Naked Mind 30 day alcohol experiment is definitely working for me. Hope everyone has a good weekend- I know it will be a challenge to stay dry for some folks but you can do this ❤️💪🤞
