Renewing passport for child (no change of details)

Our AC’s passport runs out soon, we got their first one five years ago.

The old one already has their adoptive name on it however the online form had a space to write in any previous name so I did that. The box which said has name changed since last passport was marked NO by the system, as nothing has changed.

The guidelines are rather woolly about what they need. Having read the main renewal section and adoption section, it seems to me that I don’t need to send lots of additional paperwork this time round. Is that correct does anyone know?

Hi @mehday
I didn't send anything additional when I renewed my son' passport

Catleveltired · 10/09/2023 16:25

That is correct- renewal is a breeze compared!

LeoLeo2 · 10/09/2023 18:29

Fairly sure I ticked 'no previous names' on the renewal. Definitely didn't send any other documents.

Thanks, have just had the next step sent to me after a friend verified the photo and they only need me to send the old passport.

I am curious @LeoLeo2 why you would tick no?

I also tick no. Because -

“This document is known as an adoption certificate and replaces the original birth certificate for all legal purposes” (from .gov website).

ie birth certificate / previous names are legally superseded by adoption certificate.

LeoLeo2 · 06/10/2023 14:27

I tick no for the same reason as given above. Their birth name no longer legally exists - so is not a previous name in a legal sense.

I am adopted and never tick that box and it has never been an issue (am over 40 now).

I must admit it does make me feel as bit as if I am lying but I also reason that my adoption certificate overrides my original birth certificate so it is the right way to handle it.

I also ticked “no”.
