Christmas survival thread

So, I'm thinking we could do with a place to vent about the particular joys of parenting adopted children through the Christmas season. For my two it's our first Christmas together so knowing what Christmas "looks like" to them, minefields to side step and general sensory and emotional overload is stretching my patience to it's limits.

So far this week my 6 year old threw an almighty tantrum yesterday because she wanted a snack, didn't want a snack, wanted tv bit not that tv, had to wear uniform to school, didn't want breakfast but did want cereal. She also cried all the way home from school today for no apparent reason other than I hugged her back when she hugged me.

My 4 year old has asked about birth mum for the first time, his foster carers and "what happens when I need another new family".

I suspect it's the emotional onslaught that is Christmas but I could do with some humour to keep me sane.

What's the most endearing, funny, bizarre or just plain hard reaction you're dealing with. WineCakeFlowers to those of us picking our way through the festive season.

Well ladies, I did honourable service on that Nativity thread (as did the wondrous fatberg) but the twats have finally ground me down so I'm popping back for a refuel. Goodnight and see you tomorrow!

Mintylizzy9 · 17/12/2017 07:21

You really can't reason with stupid, for your own sanity leave them to it.

I wonder what the collective noun for a group of stupid twats is?

A gaggle?
A pack?
A herd?
A flock?
A murder?
A troupe?
A mebubzmerulez?
The Conservative party?

Poor wee soul . And poor traumatised mum .

fatberg · 17/12/2017 11:57

Glad his eyes looking better.

I’ve been pinned under a poorly youngster —forever— for a couple of days so I had time to waste on stupid thread. But yes, I had indeed forgotten how many idiots hang out in AIBU...

fatberg · 18/12/2017 21:01

And definitely don’t look at the AIBU about exclusions.

PoppyStellar · 18/12/2017 21:08

Yep, I had a quick look then gave that one a wide berth fatberg!

Mintylizzy9 · 18/12/2017 21:40

Hope your little one is feeling better fatberg.

Ooh what's this, more idiots? I'd best not look I've already reached my peak by calling someone a dickhead today in front of DS. He thought it was brilliant Blush in my defence he (el dickhead) almost rammed my car with his shitty van when he drove over a grass verge rather than wait in line like every other person trying to leave and blowing my horn didn't feel savage enough at the time (leaving a festive venue after 4 hours of fairground rides and loud music and a very excited child...need I say more) so I took the lady like stance of sticking my head out of the window and bellowing watch my car you dickhead DS kept shouting blow the horn again mummy blow it 🤦🏻‍♀️

fatberg · 18/12/2017 21:56

Yeah, exclusions should be hard on the parents to motivate them to, you know, parent better.

Handy for updating the spreadsheet though.

Mintylizzy9 · 19/12/2017 13:06

Hospital again this morning and no perm damage! He chose lunch at Sainsburys cafe as his treat 😊

Making the most of it now, back in work tomorrow 😒

Italiangreyhound · 19/12/2017 13:14

B1rdonawire Bloomington' heck, keep your tummy button safe! I would hate that. My dad used to say if you unscrewed your tummy button your bum would fall off!

Merry Christmas one and all.

Mintylizzy9 · 22/12/2017 14:52

Winning at surviving today, currently 40 minutes in a queue to get the car cleaned (DS up upchucked in it yesterday and there's only so much I can do with wet wipes and desperation). DS is not with me, I have the heating on, my music playing no wheels on the fucking bus and nobody has spoken to me and I haven't had to speak to anyone.....ahhhh

Ignoring the fact that my next stop is Aldi for forgotten loo roll and custard on what looks like the shopping day from hell!

Kr1st1na · 22/12/2017 16:19

Glad you are surviving Lizzy, hope mini mints eye is ok.

Jellycatspyjamas · 22/12/2017 16:26

Yay, well done. We're having the Friday from hell - kids finished school, knackered and close to popping with excitement. We've had a steady stream of people who want drop kids gifts (despite me pointing out it's not a good time) who just don't get it and are surprised when my 6 year old has a screaming meltdown when asked what she wants from santa.

I have a cold and the period from hell - roll on bedtime.

Ah no, ignore the front door. I have the last two nights even though people kept hammering on it and just made a game of it with with DS Blush

Apart from visitors at bedtime being a massive trigger for DS my house is a shit tip at the minute. Tomorrow is blitz day, today was shopping and fridge/larder Tetris on top of swimming lessons, therapy session and the time I spent cleaning the car (DS has chundered in it 🤢😷) before taking it to be valeted.

The gammy eye is as good as new (never ceases to amaze me how quickly they heal), the chest infection isn't fml roll on January!

I've poured a drink already, I'm about to tackle the living room toy pile and have a couple of hours before DS is delivered back so need to ship out the shite before he does otherwise I will be living in my car by Boxing Day as there will be no room for me in the house!

Next year I'm going to my mums and then I won't have to clean my house 😁

PoppyStellar · 22/12/2017 20:13

I have an over tired child refusing to sleep and calling me stinky head because I won't read her another story. I am trying to channel my inner zen and outwardly I appear calm and unflappable. Inwardly I am screaming like a banshee and mentally pouring myself an enormous drink...

Jellycatspyjamas · 22/12/2017 20:50

I'm home, the kids are in bed, I've locked the front door and am mainlining ibuprofen - and we've pretty much decided to pull out of a family party tomorrow and have a pj day at home. Hopefully that'll get us back on track for Christmas Eve and the day itself.

Minty is the eye all better now. My ds had a chickenpox vaccine at about four. The doctor stick him with needle and ds looked dagets at him and Ouch that hurt! On a very accusatory manner. Two minutes later he was chatting to the doc, who smiled at me and said "they are very forgiving aren't they."

I remember holding dd down so they could blood for a MENAYC trial.

It's horrible at the time but as others said, it's all part of doing our best for them. You are a great mum. Flowers

Mintylizzy9 · 22/12/2017 22:39

Yes amazingly the swelling and redness has all gone and we're down to four doses of eye drops a day now 💃🏻 His eye test wasn't great compared to his last (he has quarterly tests for an eye condition) but they are fairly sure that this is temporary whist everything heals so no more hospital for us until his next standard check in a few weeks 😎

How's everyone getting on? DS is coping well today and is looking forward to his grandma and grandad sleeping over and has made a few comments about all the presents under the tree being his!

I'm having five minutes from cleaning before the final push then I'm planning on a big ice cold baileys. I finished and started all the wrapping last night so tonight is all about relaxing and possibly trying to get DS to go to bloody sleep!

Hope he likes his presents, I should have shares in Thomas and Friends!

I hope everyone has a lovely day and that any meltdowns are swift and painless. I have stockpiled the fizz to ensure I stay more therapeutic than crazed so cheers to you all [santa] Glitterball
