Alternatives to Padlet?

My university has axed our subscription to Padlet, which is a total pain as I use it a lot with my students in class. I have an in-class participation element as part of my assessment, done in small groups, which is documented on Padlets that the students post on during class and are saved on our course Moodle page. They then use these for revision.

I like Padlet because it automatically adds the student’s name, it separates each student comment into one “post-it note”, everyone can see other group members’ comments as they post them, and because it’s easy to use (oh and I can make nice bright backgrounds that are relevant to the theme we’re discussing that week!).

Is there anything else remotely similar that is free or cheap to use? I asked our learning resources team and they suggested a shared Google doc, which isn’t at all the same, so I am hoping someone will have a better suggestion that they’ve used in teaching.

Thank you!

Never used it so not sure what it's like but if you have BlackBoard Ultra there is a course discussion board for each module?

Catabogus · 17/09/2025 09:28

We don’t use Blackboard - there is a “course discussion forum” on Moodle but this isn’t useful for real-time class note-taking on group work. It’s more for asking the other students something between seminars.

How many Padlet boards do you need - or could you make do with? I only use the free version which I think has 4 boards. I reuse them every year.

A Moodle Board? Though it apparently lets students engage anonymously so presumably doesn't add their name.

VallarMorghulis · 17/09/2025 16:23

You could use a Moodle board, or a whiteboard like the zoom or Microsoft one

I need 6 per class group, per week - so at least 18-24 a week.

Interesting - I don’t know what this is, and haven’t noticed it on the weird, bespoke version of Moodle we use! I will have another look

I've not found anything quite like it. Would your department fund it directly for you?

I wish! Sadly not.

There's a 'temu' version called Wakelet. I used this a whole ago.

I just do as a pp and recycle. I also have two different accounts so get twice as many for free.

Floofle · 24/09/2025 16:56

You can make an "announcements" board on blackboard if you have that? That looks pretty similar to padlet I think

Mumteedum · 24/09/2025 18:28

@Floofle I thought announcements were just bulletins. I didn't know there was anything padlet like? I will have to experiment more.

There’s an activity called board that’s similar to padlet. Announcements is a forum .

Cool. I'll take a look thanks @VallarMorghulis @Floofle
