Unsuccessful in promotion round, next steps to take

Went for SL promotion (internal round) under categories of teaching and knowledge transfer. Was unsuccessful and feedback was generic and did not match my application. No grounds to appeal.

Due to workload and year round teaching (no Summer break for my subject), there is simply no time for research however I spent 0.2
FTE leading on national strategic work for 6 months securing income for the School. Apparently though this is not knowledge transfer according to my feedback.

My workload is exactly the same (if not more) as SLs in the team in terms of module, cohort leadership as well as other lead roles. Most of them achieved this a number of years ago when financial climate was less challenging but it feels the School are getting much more from me at circa £10-15k pa less than my colleagues. Only APs have PhDs.

Considering next steps and would appreciate some advice. Carving out time for research, PhD, publishing is nigh on impossible given my current workload with a very demanding student body and additional responsibilities mandated from our PSRB.

Feeling demoralised.

At least you got the chance of applying for promotion. At my place all promotions have been frozen for past two years. I’m guessing that in places where it isn’t frozen their way of financially managing is by being super picky with promotions? The whole weirdness of promotions in HE where you have to do way more than you’re paid on the off chance you might get promoted is falling apart now as it’s dawning on people that there just isn’t the cash for promotions. We have a lot of staff in my dept moving back to the NHS because pay is better and the work has better boundaries.

Can you ask for more specific feedback? Where I work if a promotion application is unsuccessful, a meeting is arranged with the applicant, a member of the promotions panel and HR, along with the applicant's HoD. Can you push for this?

I do think it was a tick boxing exercise as have not heard of anyone in School being successful and/or panel seemed to want way beyond SL remit to promote. I believe internal panels are a regulatory requirement at our HEI so maybe why they still went ahead.

NHS return is a definite option.

I will push for further feedback.
