PhD thesis corrections deadline help

PhD supervisor mumsnetters in UK: please help me with this question.

I passed my viva for a PhD, but got major corrections. I was happy with that. I’m submitting in the next few days on the day of the deadline.
I’ve addressed all of their comments regards research and structure, but I don’t think I’ll have a 100% polished thesis. E.g. references, appendix. Will they reject it? Suggest an Mphil? Or tell me to do a final tidy?

For context, I’ve had a hard few years. Was running out of time to have a baby. Had a difficult few years with my own health and pregnancy and submitted when they were a few months old. Been working full time/parenting baby/caring for a terminally ill relative. You know ladies, sarky tone having it ALLLL! I got two extra months, for corrections, but goodness. It’s been a slog. I barely sleep. It’s the only time I have to do it.

Any advice would be much appreciated- I feel scared all my work has been in vain.

Well, why don't you just ask for a slight extension for your revisions so you can sort the bibliography and appendices? If they're not sorted, it's not finished is it?

I get it though. Did my PhD while having 2 kids and working as well. Submitted when youngest had just turned 1. Well done. Tough but worth it!

Phder · 22/02/2025 00:41

It’s hard going isn’t it? Solidarity and very well done on getting there.

No it wouldn’t be finished. You’re right..

I already got an extension of 2 months, and was told by the grad school director that it’s all they can do. So another extension is not a goer.

Just going to have to brace myself.

Can you get help with the baby for weekend, and just blitz the references and appendices. I sometimes think PhD students spend too long procrastinating over stuff. If you’ve done the body of the work, then Appendices and referencing is just the final short push.

MoetUndChandon · 22/02/2025 01:14

What sort of state are your references in?

This. You are so close - surely you can burn the midnight oil and cross all Ts/sort those Qs

If you've addressed all the required corrections, that should be sufficient to get you over the line. They may give a few minor corrections, that's not unheard of.
You can always do the editing for spelling, grammar, check referencing at the finalising stage before you send off the final version to the library.
Good luck!

This. I would check that the student addressed the concerns in a meaningful way, and if so, ask there be a final tidy up. That’s fine. OP, get the work in…you’ll be all right.

Thank you all so much. I really appreciate you taking the time. And giving suggestions. I’m ploughing through the last couple of chapters, to sort the rest of the comments, so know I won’t have time to have it perfect. And I know I can’t ask for more time. They were final about that.

My stomach is in ribbons with fear, but this has helped.

@MoetUndChandon the ref are ok - all Medeley, so I haven’t checked that the web/book/guidelines are perfect. It’s more the tables and figures index.

It doesn’t make sense for them to fail me at this stage, but sometimes rules are rules, etc.
@Patterncarmen and @Justkeepingplatesspinning thanks so much.

The tables and figures index is a very small piece of work. Do you have anyone who’s good at this type of stuff? If so they’ll have it done v quickly

Phder · 21/02/2026 21:56

Can I just come back here and thank you all.
I was absolutely shitting myself when I wrote this. @KittytheHare I'd assumed the tables and figs were a massive job and your comment was so helpful to.

Anyway, I'm a doctor now.
