My dd, does bio, chem and maths and she is quite a bright student who achieved mostly nines and a few eights at gcse. Although she is happy with bio and chem (wants to do dentistry), she wishes she did philosophy instead of maths as she would enjoy it more and find it easier. Often, she is angry and regretful about this choice. Is it worth retaking a year or not?

Taking 3 years to do 3 A levels will make her application less competitive as many will have done 4 Alevels in 2 years

It won't make the slightest difference

If she wants to change then she should change

You may get more feedback on the HE board, OP.

I am a former RG admissions tutor. Some highly selective units of admissions will pause over this, but most RG+ will not. Some, even highly selective ones, may find it refreshing.

If DD is highly focussed on certain degree programmes, she might want to ask their admissions tutors what they would think of this change. It is a good time of year for this query.

Does DD know what she would like to study? On a practical level, Maths is the most facilitating subject.

If she knows she won’t need it, I think she should follow her instincts.
