Thank you after interviews

Does anyone send a thank you email after being interviewed for an academic role/position?

I've never done so but looking online, it's highly recommended - not sure if it's just an American thing?

I'd feel uncomfortable sending a thank you email after an interview and wouldn't want to come across as pushy, but now wondering if I've been committing a faux-pas by not doing so!!

There’s no need to do this and, yes, it can come across as pushy. I always feel uncomfortable when I receive one of those emails.

Personally I hate receiving them, even more so if it’s from someone I know 100% I won’t be offering the job to

I didn't get chance to send a thank you! By the time I had got home a few hours later, the phone was ringing.
I've had a couple of successful candidates email to thank me for interviewing them, and that's been nice to keep in touch and then welcome them to the uni when they start. Especially when they've been from a different dept.
Anything else smacks of sucking up to the interview panel. It's generally a waste of time because decisions are made at our place before we leave the room after candidates have left.
