Senior lecturer at post-1992 here, healthcare topic. Looking to start a PhD within next 12 months (can't put it off any longer 
). My faculty's research lead has suggested that I take a look at EdD or 'PhD by portfolio' (not publication). I'm happy with the structure of the former but I'd never even heard of the latter! Googling doesn't bring up much that's useful either.
Obviously I will go back to her to see if she can give me any more info or direct me to someone in the university who knows more, but in the meantime...any experiences / tips / warnings re the 'portfolio' route?
