Job offer when pregnant

Several months ago I applied for an academic job, interviewed, no dice. Meanwhile I accepted a new temp contract at my current place of work to start in August after my current contract finishes. I am also pregnant, due December (not that either my current employer or prospective one know this). Today, several months later, new starter hasn't worked out and they want to offer me the job!

On one hand, I've already signed a contract from August, I'm pregnant so no idea if the offer will stand after they find out and even if so, leaving before baby arrives would mean I'd lose occupational maternity pay. But the job being offered is permanent, and comes up so rarely. Its also local enough we wouldn't need to relocate, so the chance of a similar opportunity is so slim. What the fuck do I do?

Accept it! And congratulations. you won’t get paid maternity leave though in the new job - only smp

I wouldn't even get SMP, I'd only get maternity allowance as I would change jobs during qualifying window 😭

My DH has just got an at risk of redundancy through so the hit from reasonable OMP to MA really worries me!

Otherwise looks like resounding take the job though! I just feel so guilty 🙈

definitely take the permanent job.

I took my first permanent job while TTC and started work when 6 weeks pregnant. no problems at all - I didn't get great maternity pay, but otherwise work able to cover my leave and it all worked out fine.

A bit of embarrassment is worth it when the price is a stable, local, permanent job.

I know you're correct, I just need to shake off the guilt. Guess I'll have to suck it up and tell prospective job I'm pregnant and see if the offer still stands (I'd be over 25 weeks when I started even if I handed in my notice today!).

Don't feel guilty. People have children. They can't take the job offer away. It would be discrimination.
