IT services won't grant me admin rights!

Aaaaargh bloody IT services!!!!!!
Sorry I just need a moan...
I need to download random bits of software to do my job, but they refuse to grant me admin privileges! The most recent thing is trying to do a bit of web development... I need node.js, which takes them a couple of days to approve, then yarn, which is the same bloody story! Meanwhile my manager is like "have you had a chance to edit the website?" ... er no, because I can't bloody download any software without having to speak to some drippy "IT support" worker.
I understand they're trying to stop students torrenting crap and bringing the whole system down with viruses, but surely staff should get some extra level of access??? Especially ones in the school of engineering!

“.. I don't know much about web stuff really”

And this is the reason for IT

I’m a university lecturer and to be honest they better not grant me admin rights to anything as I’d bring the system down. I do all my “Boxphish” training of how to spot dodgy stuff and then a few days later there will be some email I get sent with a message about new leave policy or something and I click on it only to be told it’s a BoxPhish test which I’ve failed. I can imagine a lot of staff are the same. Great that you’re not, but they don’t know that.

Hear hear! I am increasingly pissed off with attitude from academics to support staff. The gulf is widening between them and making universities a vile place to work. The sense of entitlement from some academics coupled with passive aggressive behaviour (I'll tell my funder you're stopping me research... - go ahead!) is mind blowing.

StamppotAndGravy · 20/09/2023 06:55

I really disagree! If you only give postdocs 2 years of funding, damn well don't get in the way of us trying to do our research. Every 2 week wait for IT to order or approve something knocks time off that. Every time you force us to confirm to your arbitrary norms we lose time by having to update all our code. If we've brought our own money it's even more insulting when you refuse to let us spend it. Useless IT services work fine in organisations with static staff. Services is the key word though. They don't serve, they dictate. Either give us freedom or give us permanent contracts. And before you say it, I'm qualified as an ISO27001 auditor so I know why they do it, but they fail to balance the security vs accessibility business case.

OP, try switching to Linux. They normally leave you alone then! Or move to the EU where few universities tolerate this shit.

I get it! It's frustrating but we just have to wait. At this time of year our IT people are even slower than normal due to the influx of new students.

When I've been in your position I've just explained why I haven't been able to do X to my line manager and asked her to get the Department Manager to contact IT to have me moved to the top of the list. This usually works.
