Hi all, and sorry to barge into your space but ,for a range of reasons, I didn't want to put this in HE.

I'd like to understand exactly how bad an undergrad essay needs to be to outright fail, without having plagiarised or failed to comply with word limits. There is, of course, a story attached to this. I have read through quite a few threads and am 100% confident that none of you is at my DS's uni/his tutor.

I'm not agitating for evidence for an appeal ; I am just a bit confounded by a whole process and wanted some expert input. My DF is a retired lecturer and I have his thoughts but he is in marketing and hasn't marked undergrad work for about 10 years now.

If you can lend me your ears and thoughts please let me know! I obviously won't add lots of chapter and verse wastefully unless someone responds.

Ah. How many attempts is he allowed? Check the regulations (we allow more than two...).

There's also the option of leaving with an ordinary degree, using that to start a PG Cert or Grad Cert, and then using one of those as the entry qual to the Masters. Hopefully it won't come to that, but there are always options for the very determined.

He is allowed one resit.

Not sure how funding works for the things you mentioned?

Not findable - he'd have to work and pay himself - perhaps via OU?

One exam resit yes that's normal - I'm talking about a complete repeat btw - that's different. Either the entire year or just the module. He should ask his SU for advice.

It's a complete module - they don't have exams.

Just an update. DS passed. Given 57 for the plan and 42 for the essay. A relief after unbelievable stress.

I'm so pleased for you and your DS @Piggywaspushed.
I think our DC started their higher education at the same time. Does he know what degree classification he got?

I'm so happy for him, and for you, it sounds like he deserved a pass for that essay and the 2:2 reflects that too. Well done!
