Waiting to hear after interview...

Is no news good news or is it, actually, bad news in the case of academic interviews? Have been told that candidates will he told today or tomorrow and haven’t heard anything yet... am doing lots of [read ‘too much’] speculating - thinking that offer will have gone out to first choice today and that everyone else will be notified tomorrow? Thoughts and experience much appreciated.

It depends. Not necessarily bad news. Sometimes they have a first choice and have to wait for their decision before telling other candidates, sometimes they have to sort visa issues, sometimes the panel can't come to an immediate decision, sometimes there's more than one job ... I hope you have heard by now or do so soon. Good luck!

It can take a while. If you haven't heard anything by the end of the week, then it probably means you aren't first on the list, but it also doesn't mean that you won't get an offer. The first person will have some time to think about before rejecting/accepting, then the second, etc.
