Will lecturers provide references for job applications?

I have only ever needed academic references, but I am taking a gap year whilst doing PhD applications and wanted to apply for some jobs. I have seen a temporary position that I wish to apply for, it is broadly related to my degree but in an industry context rather than an academic context.

I've had difficulty getting hold of my tutor who knows me well and has quite a well-rounded view of me so I am thinking of asking my master's supervisor instead as they are a lot easier to reach and have written me a reference quite recently for a PhD application. However, he only knew me for a year and in the very limited context of only my project. He did not teach me at all so he wouldn't be able to comment on my performance in group work, seminars or presentations.

Would it be appropriate to ask him? I will need a reference from someone at university to cover the years I was in university as the application requires a full three year history to be covered by references.

I would go for the easiest ask in the current climate, your Masters' supervisor knew you best the most recently, so go with that.
