Are you a lecturer? Could you advise me please?

Hello everyone, I’m hoping for some advice from lecturers. Smile I’m doing an assignment for my masters but it's ended up now at the last minute because I've learned it's impossible to study when homeschooling! I really, really don't want to have to ask my supervisor for an extension so I was wondering if anyone knows from their experience if this would be possible - I have four hour long interviews to code and then write up the themes. Do you think I could do the coding tomorrow and start to work out the thematic map, and then finish the thematic map and write up the findings section on Sunday? Would that be possible? I haven't done it before so not sure how long it would take. I don't mind staying up all night on the Red Bulls and having very little sleep! Thank you Smile

Email your tutors and explain and ask for an extension. People will be lenient due to the current situation.

Stop procrastinating on MN! It's a bank holiday so nothing is going to happen till Tuesday. Start the work and see how you go.

Toilenstripes · 22/05/2020 19:25

Email your tutor and don’t leave it to the last minute anymore. Your tutors deserve the respect of timely communications.

dustyfloordrobe · 22/05/2020 19:26

No, I would not advise that.

Why don't you want to ask for an extension? My place is handing out extensions left, right and centre (quite rightly imo).

Woofsaidtheladybird · 22/05/2020 19:27

Qualitative analysis ALWAYS takes longer than you think it will.

Your uni should be offering extenuating circumstances surely?

dustyfloordrobe · 22/05/2020 19:29

Tbh you're likely to produce poor-quality work with that plan, probably fail, and then just have to do it all over again anyway. It will be a waste of your time and - quite honestly - that of your lecturers as well. Get an extension.

It's a crap time but this is not the solution. They will understand.

SueEllenMishke · 22/05/2020 19:31

Ask for an extension. I've given my students extensions for similar reasons to yours.
It's hard juggling everything and we've been told to be flexible.

Phphion · 22/05/2020 20:22

What is the actual assignment? How long does the write up need to be?

ghislaine · 22/05/2020 21:37

If I denied you an extension that you needed because your children are at home because schools are closed, I would be in deep doo-doo at my institution.

Do what you can and email your tutor first thing on Tuesday. That way your email will be at the top of the inbox and you can show that you have done some work.

Thank you for all your comments.

The findings section probably needs to be about 1500-2000 words.

Damn, I really hoped at least some people would say it was possible! I thought it might take two hours to code each interview? I desperately want to be able to finish it by Sunday night.

I honestly really do not want to ask for an extension. Long story, sorry. Sad

Not a lecturer but my husband got a weeks extension on his MA due to his Easter holiday being more or less cancelled due to his school closing and him having to design and implement an online curriculum (he’s a head of dept).

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 25/05/2020 20:23

You might get it done, but it's unlikely to be to the best of your ability. I'd say try it, and ask for the extension. That way you can have some edit time.
Ask for the extension now, not on the day it's due in.
