Hello
I have a Skype interview coming up for a distance learning tutor job and wondered if anyone had any tips for both the interview (practicalities) and the type of things they might ask?! Thanks!

No experience of distance teaching, but practicality wise:

Test your equipment ahead of time using the skype test call. Make sure you’re not going to be disturbed by the landline or anyone in the house.

I’d imagine they’ll want to know how you’ll organise the learning experience in case the student struggling. How you’ll deal with no shows, might they ask how does this differ from conventional teaching?

Thanks impostersyndrome (excellent name, sums up my feelings exactly!). I did a test run yesterday by skyping a friend.
Good question to think about too. I suppose its doubly important to ensure that students feel supported and in contact with the university to feel engaged with learning. I'd thought that it would be useful to vary teaching approaches to appeal to different kinds of learners but in terms or re-engagement I'll have to think about that one.
I feel waaay out of my depth.

Ha! yes, I was very surprised to find the name available. There are loads of us with this 'illness', especially on this section of the board.

One other thought: it sounds like something an open university person would know about. Is there any guidance online for OU tutors?

And lots of luck.

Probably not particularly helpful but dress smart, and sit at a desk.
DP had a friend who years ago had a skype interview, wearing smart top half but just boxers on the bottom... had to get up to find something and had to shuffle out of shot!

It's a terrible feeling! As the interview gets closer I keep thinking what the hell am I doing, I'm going to make a fool out of myself. But on the other hand, it should be good experience.
Excellent question re online support for tutors, I'm hoping there will be some sort of training offered in the highly unlikely event that I was offered a job.
Ha that made me chuckle Clivey I will definitely dig out my interview clothes. I also read a tip that said to put laptop on books so it was face height, rather than looming over the top, so I'll make sure I do that too.
Sweaty palms just thinking about it!
