USS Pension scheme - is it worth it?

Hi,

I'm joining on to a research post for a 12 month short term contract and tbh I am not sure if I'll stay in academia after it. Is it worthwhile then opt-ing into the USS Pension scheme? I can see I'd loose about £160 a month from my take home monthly salary.

Yes. It’s one of the best

Yes absolutely - it's also very transferable, so worth it even if you don't stay in academia.

Thank you! :)

I believe that if you choose not to pay in to the scheme through salary sacrifice then you would get the option of a refund of your contributions if less than 2 years service. If you do pay in through salary sacrifice then you won't get the option of a refund.

Double check but something to keep in mind.
