4x 1/2 hour on Grant 1, going to do one more session and then home to draw pumpkins on children.

Unfortunately baby's afternoon nap was only long enough for me to realise I've been using page references from two different editions of a book interchangeably. Sigh.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/11/2017 08:45

Whew! Not that it is terribly thrilling, but I got my article finished at 11.56pm, 4 minutes before deadline. I feel like a student.

Now I feel positively relaxed at the prospect of marking essays while the baby eats the print-outs.

hat, I hope you got the references sorted. That sort of thing makes me want to cry.

Today's aim: go through Grant 1 all the way once more before sending it on to collaborators 3 and 4.
It needs to get done ASAP!

Hatstand · 02/11/2017 10:38

Well done LRD!

DH took DD out for the afternoon so I managed to fix the referencing and submit the paper. Only a few smaller bits and bobs to do before Xmas now.

Good work folks!
By contrast I’ve just written to the publisher for an extension Sad

Well done lrd!

I was up at 4 ☹️ And still haven't finished my seminar for tomorrow. That plus I need to spend all saturday working on a conference paper = I am feeling a bit low.

Can't wait for end March and end of teaching / submission of paper 2 / submission of HEA fellowship. I am going to have a data analysis sabbatical!

Well done LRD. It is

Hi, I'd like to join in. I have a made a solid promise to myself that I will start drafting the paper I have been meaning to write for a while now - a few months first thing tomorrow morning (9am). I want this paper written by the end of this month.

Well done LRD. Drowning in teaching here so no writing news. Still hoping to get one sorted before Christmas. Semester two is more research happy.

One paper back with harsh reviews but we will get that one back in.

Good luck pete and hope you have had some free time this weekend bigkids.

Onwards we go to Monday.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 06/11/2017 09:36

Thanks all. Smile I did nothing all weekend and it was blissful (though the baby now has a cold). Today I have an abstract to submit, and after that I'm on to Big Target, which is back to the book.

bigkids I hope (and trust) your seminar went well!

Good luck with your target peteme.

Grant 1 going back to collaborators today; haven't got Book Chapters back nor anything on Student 1 Papers. I should probably start on Student 2 Paper but may just spend a couple of half hours on Grant 2.

Hello everyone

7 weeks until Christmas!

I didn't get much time off over the weekend but I don't care because a new experiment worked like a charm 💪💃 and I'm off this afternoon and Thursday morning for a few hours.

Paper one submitted last week: this week I'm going to start paper 2! 2 x half hour every day this week.

@purplepandas Sorry to hear of your harsh reviews. I felt all my papers received some harsh reviews but then were eventually accepted after major changes, best of luck!

I've started drafting it together. I've got the bare skeleton together. It is difficult to decide what not to include, as I'm only reporting part of a study, and it feels hard on my heart to split the study up. It has much more 'value' staying together but it just wouldn't be publishable in a journal then due to word count sigh

7 weeks you say? time for a regroup. I had said:

1. Grant application due 1st Oct (nearly finished)
Done

2. Manual for our technique that we have a book contract for (!). I'm timetabling 1 hour per day in 2 slots (I use pomodoro to stop myself doing rubbish going on MN at the same time as pretending to write.
Looks like I might get a first draft of this done but I'm waiting for colleague to comment on 3 chapters before starting any more

3. Finalise and submit paper that ex-PhD-student-1 has not quite finished, and has vanished.
Well, that was optimistic. I found the student but no progress on the paper. I'm going to talk to my other co-author about whether we take it back again.

4. Write first draft of paper that ex-PhD-student-2 has not even thought about starting.
Not done anything. I will downgrade this to "outline" rather than "first draft" and seriously get down to this.

But I have also been working on
5. Submit other grant due Dec 1st
It's just gone for its last round of colleagues before I finalise and submit so that is good.

6. Draft of final grant with nominal due date of March 1st
I've got through one draft and feel I need to move it on to someone else now.

You've done brilliantly already!

I said:

1. Submit paper one

DONE

3. Full draft paper 2

Starting tonight!

3. Five out of eight HEA assignments done

Four done, one to go

4. Good draft of ethics

I'm pushing this into 2018. It's important but not urgent (I can use a colleague's).

Great stuff!
Copied from upthread:
Finish current chapter by 8 Oct.
Chapter 2 finish by 28 Oct
Chapter 1 by 10 Nov
kind of - have done all this but left gaps (things that won’t require much brainpower but will take time no doubt)
Chapters already written but needing revision & updating (4,5,6,7) by 30
Nov - impossible target, unless I meet the above ahead of time.
gosh what a stupid target. Maybe by dec 31st if I cancel xmas
December intro & conclusion
Xmas break!
References and final edit start of Jan
still hoping to finish completely by end of jan though!

I revised the bold/unbold pattern Grin

JustAnotherManicUsername · 08/11/2017 12:11

I have very nearly met my targets. Paper with major revisions is resubmitted. Second paper I just need to sort the refs and hear back from co-authors then do the journal faffing (half a day?). Another target I 'met' by withdrawing from co-authorship on that paper, as it became evident that we just didn't want to write the same paper. No hard feelings though and I only spent about two days on it. And the thinking for that may come in useful some later time. But I guess that means I'm one pub down so I haven't really met that target (it wasn't a very prestigious pub though, so not a great loss - was never going to be REFable)

So I need some new targets for before Christmas:

  1. If the resubmitted article gets rejected, rework for a new journal (this is the highest priority and will take all my time and emotional energy if it does happen. So, so hope it doesn't!)

  2. If not and in the meantime, draft the Case for Support for Funding bid 1 and send to colleagues

  3. Draft the Case for Support for Funding Bid 2 and send to potential collaborators

I'm mired in lecture writing, meetings, and sorting out the contract for the book. At least some of the new papers I'm reading for the lecture will be relevant elsewhere.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 08/11/2017 20:24

Ok, my revised targets:

  1. Finish an article by November 1st.
    DONE you fuckers, done!
  2. Finish an abstract by November 1st.
    Erm. Shuffles feet.
  3. Finish book chapter draft no. 1
    Done, but not wonderful.
  4. Finish book chapter draft no. 2
    Not done yet.
  5. Write book chapter no. 3
    Drafted, but not finished.
  6. Draft (?) book introduction.
    Not done yet.
  7. Write invited talk (wheee!!! first invited talk!!)
    Not done yet.

    Other things done:

  • The abstract for the invited talk (phew)
  • A job application that came out of the blue (sadly, totally unsuccessful but I did do a decent thorough update to my CV/covering letter)
  • A draft idea for another book
  • Two abstracts for a course I'm teaching next summer.

I think I can push on and meet my targets more or less, but the book deadline has been extended to April anyway. Which is good, because I am shattered!

Oh! And I did final revisions on the proofs of an article.

Report
worstofbothworlds · 08/11/2017 22:03

Oh oh! Turns out that Student 1 has basically finished his article SO WE CAN ALMOST SUBMIT IT. I need to tidy it and then we need to bully him into sorting out the references.

Well done all :)

I've need to start heavily editing my paper. Need to sort out the results section first, decide what goes in and stays out, and then move on to discussion and conclusion. I need to set some deadlines or else this will never happen. It is hopefully my very last paper from thesis, and will never have to see it again (this should motivate me!!) ;D
