What would be a normal length of time before you would hear if you were invited for an interview? I was in contact with the key person prior to applying and was expecting an interview but have not heard After 1 week and starting to think I must have messed up my application! this is for a research associate post. Thanks. Am driving myself mad checking emails constantly.

1 week! You don't know how this works, really do you? You lucky naive thing ...Smile

It will take HR at least a week to sort out the applications and get them to the relevant Department. It will take colleagues another few days - at least - to sort out the shortlisting. Then back to HR with the shortlist. Then references sought.

Then trying to bring 4 to 6 academics together at the same time - we have fairly busy diaries usually, find a room, try to beg admin support.

If there wasn't any indication in the advert about when the interview was likely to be, then I'd be giving it at least 3 weeks. Yours won't be the only post (in my faculty they're recruiting for about 8 jobs at the moment, and that's just one faculty), and HR have a lot of other stuff to do.

We're shortlisting tomorrow for a job and the deadline for applications was about three weeks ago I think. Interviews will be in about a month. I think that's fairly typical.

It will vary according to subject, university and job level but one week after closing date would be very quick to make a shortlist. This would only happen where I am if the position was in such a specialised subfield that there were very few applications. It certainly wouldn't happen in my own field where we have hundreds of applications for any research position.

Thanks for the replies, I was basing my expectations on previous applications where I had very prompt 'thanks but no thanks' emails!
But this time after a 2 week wait I was invited for an interview, yipee!
