Best stop off for drive from south East to Devon

Hi responsive mumsnetters
As a family of 4, a super active 3 yr old and 9 week old plus OH, we’re driving 3-4 hrs to Devon on Friday (joygasms). I’m looking for a stop off off the M4 where the eldest can run around and let out some energy. We’re driving from Amersham to Tiverton and looking for a stop around Swindon probably, something like Stanton park, is people would recommend? Hoping to set off early, stop around 10ish, spend a couple hours somewhere then continue with both kiddos asleep. Also hoping not to have to spend loads of money if possible!
thanks in advance
Alex

I would suggest going a bit further. Swindon seems a bit too close to Amersham to be the first break. If you can last 2 hours (but realistically close to 1 hr 40 mins) you could pull off the M5 at Clevedon and park at Marine Lake. There is a small beach, loos, ice creams and a walk up the woods on the left to the hill fort and quaint church on top.

Thank you, marine lake looks fantastic. Only issue is I don’t think we’ll make it on the road that long, probably more likely to need a stop after 1.5 hours or so

An alternative route would be to take the M3 route. You can do the direct M25/M3 or thread south A33 to join the M3 lower down. Once you join the A303 you are on one of the most glorious roads for this time of your. The views are breath taking and you have Stonehenge to stop at which should leave a lasting memory on your little ones.

Off M4 J16 to the right before going in to Swindon you have Lydiard park and off J18 to the left you have National Trust Dyrham Park, both are good for a run around as described with toilets refreshments and parkland for exhausting the kiddies

Thank you all for your help. We’re going to aim for Lydiard park ☺️
