DS2 has stuck a googly eye up his nose

We've caught sight of it, but haven't been able to get it out. Do you think it's likely to emerge of its own accord, or should I take a little trip to A&E?

(And how do I stop him sniffing all the time?!)

a trip to minor injuries or A&E i think! id go now before it gets crowded. theyll have it out in a jiffy.

I wanted someone to tell me I could leave it in there!

I do wonder whether a trip to A&E would put him off doing it again, though. He did it with a bead a couple of weeks ago, and we managed to retrieve that - was a bit bigger, so not so far up. He knows quite well he shouldn't do it (he's 3), and he comes and tells us as soon as he has. Apparently, it is the eye's fault - it shouldn't have been on the table looking at him.

Rang a friend who's a GP and he's going to come by in a bit and attempt extraction. If that doesn't work it sounds like it will be a little trip to hospital.

On Childrens Hospital on week there was a girl with an orange pip up her nose, the DR held the other nostril closed and the mum blew in the childs mouth. It shot out.

*Disclaimer I'm not a Dr and on the programme the Dr said not to try it at home

I love the word googly eyes.

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 16:34

You need a medical professional type person but if it is wedged he might need to be sedated to have it removed. DD2 shoved a bit of chewed jigsaw up her nose and they were so close to putting her under GA to remove it as she was getting distressed with strangers shoving tweezers up her nose.

at the eye's fault though, cheeky get.

BigBadMummy · 25/04/2010 16:34

I looked in my DD's mouth once and saw a big black lump on the roof of her mouth.

I paniced. Called the out of hours GP (was 14 years ago and we were over from Saudi on holiday) and paid an arm and a leg for the visit.

He looked in her mouth, touched it and discovered when it moved that it wasn't some kind of horrible growth.

It was a googly eye from a craft box that had managed to get wedged in the crease in her palate.

I would say definitely get it looked at. I don't suppose you can nudge it down from the outside above it can you?

I've done the mouth blow it works and it is in the helpful section in first aid manuals - was the bit that goes in end of a biro - don't ask.

WARNING: My nephew was so impressed SIL was concerned he waould start shoving anything up there do get aunty honey dragon to come over and make things shoot out again!

I think thats called a mothers kiss cocolepew.

I would give a 'kiss' too as thats probably what A&E will suggest.

How old are children before they learn to blow down their nose? I've stopped asking DS2 to try, because he just sniffs the thing further up. Perhaps I should remember to try to teach him, when he hasn't got a foreign object up there. He's the same when I'm wiping his nose, though - sniff rather than blow.

Dd2 had to be knocked out to get a hamma bead out of her nose . Best go to A&E.

Shaz10 · 25/04/2010 16:45

When I was little I got the rubber off the end of a pencil up my nose. . My parents put pepper up the other nostril and it came out marvellously.

purpleturtle · 25/04/2010 17:54

GP friend turned up with torch and scary implement for removing things from noses. Retrieved the googly eye - at which point I realised it was one of the bigger ones . I'm sure it's bigger than his nostril.

Friend then checked for further foreign objects. Just in case.

Q. What do you do when your child shoves a peanut up his nose?
A. Pour in hot chocolate and it comes out a Treet!

OMG exactly the same thing happened to DS at nursery about a month ago, it was huge I have no idea how he managed to get it lodged up there.

Thoughtfully he did it on a Monday which is my day off so we did the A&E trip and they managed to dislodge it.
