torn about what to do on my birthday!!!

My birthday falls on a Tuesday this year and I have taken the day off work. As my DC go to nursery on Tuesdays, DH has taken the Monday off and we are going to go out for the day and for tea then and DH is going to work on my birthday.

I was planning on going to the gym then going to a local shopping centre for lunch and mooch round by myself - I love my own company and, having 2 DC, opportunities like this are few and far between.

However, my mum has hinted that she would quite like to come over (they live 90 minutes away) on my birthday to spend the day with me. I guess we could go out for lunch and shopping (although my mum isn't that keen on shopping and we have never had those 'mum/daughter' shopping trips that other people have) and I actually prefer to shop by myself.

I am really torn between what to do - DS1 starts school in Sept so I won't be able to take days off work to do what I want again so this will probably be my last one but feel guilty as it would be nice to see my mum too.

Wwyd?

Nice lunch with your mum then shopping on your own? Or, seeing as it is a longish journey - maybe too long for just lunch- sacrifice the gym visit and spend morning doing something with your mum finishing with a nice lunch.

Maybe I'm biased as I hate the gym but love shopping on my own!

say you already have plans for your birthday. Do what you want. Not what would make someone else happy. FWIW I hate shopping with my mum too.

Thanks for the replies - had given up hope of anyone replying

If my mum comes over, she will expect to come over at lunchtime ish (she is not a morning person) and then it would only be fair that she stops until I pick the DC up from nursery so she can see them and she tends to stop until they are in bed...and then I would have to give her tea aswell.

Plimsolls sorry, the gym stays I am a strange freak of nature that loves going to the gym and goes at every opportunity (including my birthday).

Ooh still torn....

Its my birthday on Monday

My situation is a little different as my dad has just died (Easter Monday) and I am going back to work Monday after having the funeral, so was feeling really bad saying no to having people round so I just invited Mum & sis Sunday and said that it being a school night and all I wasnt going to do anything special on the day itself.
She was totally fine about it- actually relieved that she didnt have to treck over, so although it might be late notice could you invite her at the weekend instead, and maybe lie and say you are meeting friends already?

just be firm and say they can come for tea stay for early supper as you have already a date with a friend for lunch. then you can have a real family get together for your BD
