Is there a way of appearing off-line when on facebook?

I tend to have things open in the background but don't want a certain person to think I am constantly contactable! Can I appear off-line sometimes?

go into the chat window press options and there is a go offline tab

Click on 'chat' (bottom right hand corner of screen)
'options'
'go offline'

Do you have to do that every time you go on FB or is it now the default position?

It should stay the default setting if you choose it. I am always automatically offline as I pop in and out and don't want to get bogged down in conversations.

The only trouble is, if you are showing as offline, you can't see which of your friends are online (unlike with msn) which is a shame because I would like to know.

Dumbledoresgirl, there is a facebbook app you can use to see who is online, even if you are offline.

It's called "Online Now", I think.

What is an app? How do I do that then?

Facebook apps (applications) are all the games and quizzes and silly stuff on facebook.

In the search bar at the top, type in Online Now and see what comes up. You may need to search in the Applications, rather than "People" or "Groups".

Once you found the app, add it, and then click on Bookmark, and it will come up on the left hand side of your home page, so you can easily click on it to see who is online.

Thanks nowwhatdoido. I found the application and added it and it told me none of my friends are online! So maybe I don't have enough active friends to warrant the application!

Not sure what you mean about bookmarking though. Never have understood how you do that.

I'd like to see who is online and woul;dn't mind them seeing me but I have it switched to offlne because I HATE online chatting.

MN is bad enough with cross posting but chat is a nightmare, you can't ever look at what else you were doing in case the person replies, and you miss it...nightmare.

Bookmarking - not sure how this works on the new facebook, to be honest. If the link to the app is appearing on your left hand side , then you don't need to anyway. If it's not, try clicking on Account button, top right hand side, then Application Settings, and see if you can do it through there.
