The new privacy changes.

Has anybody else seen the new changes to privacy on facebook. As far as I can tell, there is some information that is publicly available to EVERYBODY!

"Are my privacy settings changing?

Some settings are changing with the recent updates to Facebook privacy, but Facebook?s commitment to providing you control over your information is not. Here?s a summary of what?s changing:

The Privacy page has been simplified, and in that process, some settings have been consolidated. For security reasons, you will now be required to enter your password if you?d like to update your privacy settings.

A privacy control has been added to the publisher at the top of your home and profile page. This allows you to set privacy on individual posts. For example, you could post a status to Everyone or only to Friends. Learn more on the Publisher help page.

Instead of having networks for regions (eg., Australia or New York City), people?s locations are now listed in the "Current City" or "Current Region" field of their profiles. This means if you use the "Friends and Networks" privacy setting, the networks part only applies to work and school networks.

##A basic set of information is publicly available, meaning it?s visible to anyone that?s able to navigate to your profile, applications you use on Facebook, and websites you connect with via Facebook. This information includes your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, friend list, and Pages.##
Any additional information (eg., photos or videos) will only be exposed if your privacy settings allow it.

Keep in mind that anyone who navigates to your profile will be able to view your publicly available information and information you?ve made visible to Everyone. In addition, your profile picture appears in places you make comments and posts. You can always change your current profile picture or lower your search visibility if you choose."

Surely we should be able to opt out of people seeing profile pictures etc..?

Personally, I think a "profile picture" should be something you're happy for all to see

Stretch · 10/12/2009 12:18

No, I am happy for people I add as friends to see. I am not happy for people randomly trawling their friends, friends to see my profile pics, friend lists etc...

I can't quite see what's the different, I selected to "keep old settings" when it popped up yesterday.

Been in to look more closesly at my privacy settings and it's only friends of friends that can see my search result on facebook and I don't allow the public search results.

Don't think I have any info that is available to "everyone"

OhChristmasTEEOhChristmasTEE · 10/12/2009 20:54

That's not a new setting, stretch. Its always been that anyone who searches for your name will see your currently selected profile picture.

I am not sure about the friend's list bit.

twooter · 10/12/2009 20:57

surely everyone needs to see friends list or photo to tell if you're who they think you are

Divster · 11/12/2009 14:28

It will show mutual friends which will be enough to tell. All profile pics can now be seen, and pages, so you may want to look what you have on these as they are now public!

SparklyGothKat · 11/12/2009 14:32

I noticed that friends of friends can add me now. Not happy, I kept my profile completely private as there is people I don;t want knowing where I am etc, so have removed my area now. Have set everything else back so I am not searchable

SantasKinkyKnickers0nMaHead · 12/12/2009 11:10

Same here SGK. Check your photo albums too, I just had a nosy on mine and the privacy settings were set to 'everyone'

I got a friend to delete me then search for me and I am now unsearchable again.

SparklyGothKat · 12/12/2009 15:34

OMG, thanks for the tipoff, all my photos were available for everyone to see There is pics on there of my kids that I only want my friends to see.... changed them back to friends only

SantasKinkyKnickers0nMaHead · 14/12/2009 08:39

I thought I was invisable but have just used a friends account after deleting myself from her list, Looked at one of my friend's friends list, and Im on there

There are certain people I dont want finding me on there, with whom we have 'mutual' friends.

Feck, looks like I wont be having a fb account for much longer.

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 14/12/2009 09:03

it's shown mutual friends for a long time as well.

Santa - if they try to add you as a friend can't you just ignore?

and you can set it so that only friends can send you messages from search results and profile.

oh how strange - I've just been looking at how my profile looks to those on my limitied profile

it ONLY shows mutual friends (ie those people who I've actually ACCEPTED friends requests from) of the person who is looking. Not all my other friends,

Mind you having said that - it also reckons those on "full" profile view can only see CURRENT mutual friends.

SantasKinkyKnickers0nMaHead · 14/12/2009 09:29

Not so long ago I wasnt searchable at all, ie, not even on friends lists.

I dint want certain people knowing I was on there because if I didna accept their friends request/reply to messages, then it would cause a huge kick up ('family' members that are trying to hunt for me for example)

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 14/12/2009 09:31

well you can still set it so you don't get any message from anyone but friends.

And friends requests.........well they're not going to know how often you use facebook.

I've always been able to see our "mutual" friends when I click on your profile though.

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 14/12/2009 09:37

and if you go to Privacy Settings

Search - Facebook search results - you can set that to only friends as well.

plus don't forget the "block people" option - so you can block them on the off chance that they do manage to find you first
