So I was looking for work on Gumtree and found an ad saying "writers wanted" I emailed asking for details and this is what I got back:

Hi there,

Thanks for your interest in the website reviewer position. We are currently looking for honest people with a keen eye for detail to visit various adult sites online and write the things they like and dislike about each. We will require 12 reviews per week which are due by 2pm EST every Friday.

The starting wage for this post is £350 per week which rises after 6 months. No previous experience is required for this position. The only requirement we have is that you submit a 100-word review of the members area at a pre-selected site (www.exposedcelebrities.net). It's completely free to join so don't worry about any costs (be sure to cancel within 3 days or you will be billed).

Please submit this review to [email protected] within 48 hours if you're still interested. This position can be taken from anywhere, it's going to be a home-based position. If this isn't for you we thank you for your time.

Thanks for your time

Any thoughts??!!

Indeed. A preselected site, ie one of theirs. And be sure to cancel, oooooh, that'll be a problem to sort out when it turns out they haven't cancelled you and they still have your credit card details and are charging you for membership...

I wouldn't believe a word of it.

ChickandDuck · 21/11/2009 23:00

Scam. Fact.

whomovedmychocolate · 21/11/2009 23:02

What sort of review could one give a porn site anyway?

'Fast downloads, the pictures exploded across my screen, particularly liked the gang bang, and nice lampshade in the housewives section'

juneybean · 21/11/2009 23:05

I'd do it! lol

Fruitysunshine · 21/11/2009 23:10

If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

EachPeachPearMum · 21/11/2009 23:25

They'd use porn in the hope that most people ripped off would be too ashamed to report it.

chestnutblue · 22/11/2009 00:00

EachPeach you are a genius and I'm sure you are right!

Bitoffun that's a very interesting article. Thanks. wish I could post a warning on Gumtree but I suppose this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Why thank you chestnut! I need to hear that more often

Nah... I just listen to R4 a lot and there was something about it on the other day... probably on MoneyBox Live or something, about how it's awful, as there are a lot of these 'jobs' around (not porn reviewing usually!) and people get completely blacklisted, cannot have a bank account afterwards etc etc...

UnquietDad · 22/11/2009 00:07

Let's be honest, if this kind of thing existed as a real "job" with no scams or strings attached - not necessarily with porn even - an awful lot of people would be "working from home" doing it!!

paisleyleaf · 22/11/2009 00:13

EachPeach..."They'd use porn in the hope that most people ripped off would be too ashamed to report it."
That's a good point. I've heard of that before with another scam. I can't remember the details but it was to do with cheques.

BitOfFun · 22/11/2009 00:35

Where are the people telling me I'm a genius?

whomovedmychocolate · 22/11/2009 08:37

BoF - dunno people say the same to me and clearly they are correct mistaken

Frumperlicious · 22/11/2009 09:26

Paisleyleaf someone told me about a scam involving cheques the other day too, can't remember the details but it was genius!

paisleyleaf · 22/11/2009 10:05

Ah, it might have been this

Rebeccadiamond · 22/11/2009 10:23

12 reviews a week at 100 words is 1200 words. I write and there are not many places that pay that well for that amount. Almost certainly a scam. You will have to give card details and I very much doubt the cancelling after 3 days will work.

theworldsgoneDMmad · 22/11/2009 10:52

They want you to review your site for free, then they'll claim you haven't passed the test and so cannot proceed. Simple.

thedollshouse · 22/11/2009 10:57

Definitely a scam. Lots of people would be happy to do this for free. Why do they need to pay someone £350 a week?

Mamazon · 22/11/2009 12:33

the company own that page. you jon and then they get extra traffc to the page. you dont cancell and they have your card detals.

all very dodgey

MissGreatBritain · 22/11/2009 12:39

Why don't you email one of the papers or something, see if they'd be interested in doing the job and exposing the scam?

bruceb · 14/12/2009 22:01

Hmmmm.

I have no moral standpoint on this but I do think this is likely to be the time when the saying "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is" is true.
