Explaining the point of a Christening

DD1 (3.5yo) has been invited to friend's christening & after-party, along with all their friends from pre-school. We are not religious but not anti either, we just don't talk about God at home. I have no idea how to explain to DD1 what a christening is, what it means etc, any ideas?

It's welcoming a new member into the Church. You could explain it's a party to welcome dd's friend.
