Why do footballers always marry attractive women and why do so many high-profile attractive women tend to go for footballers? Discuss.

I mean, part of me says "it's not rocket science", but I don't want to be sexist about it.

Maybe it's more complex than one imagines.

well footballers aren't likely to be drinking in t he same places as the girl next door so are unlikely to meet your regular girl off the street.

Also most career focused intelligent women will be put off with the idea of dating a footballer because of the stigma attached.

ahundredtimes · 29/09/2009 18:06

I'm not sure that many high-profile attractive women do go for footballers though? Sure there are a few, and plenty who marry other people

I don't think it's all that complex. Girl band pop stars meet boy footballers and get together (Cheryl, VB, Louise) and then erm, other ones meet in nightclubs and then some marry their school sweetheart and so on.

Mind you, I really don't know all that much about footballers and their wives

GeekIsGood · 29/09/2009 18:06

These footballers are young, fit and have a lot of money. They have no end (or both ends, on some team nights out!) of young flashy lookin women coming up to them in nightclubs and at parties. They have the pick of these women and pick one they do. For them, a women who is beautiful in that way boosts their status. A clever but average looking woman, or even a beautiful one who is not traditionally WAG-y, will not really boost their status in the eyes of the other players and fans.

Some women look for their own status and wealth to be improved by the man they are with. These kind of women are attracted to money, preferably with a young fit body attached, who better than a footballer!

You really shouldn't take the footballer/WAG thing to mean that women love nothing better than a young thuggish footballer, because only some of them feel like that, and probably not the brightest ones.

And plenty of men don't go for the orange glaikit nightclubber look in a female, as I'm sure you know.

When you say high-profile women, I don't think you're including academics or businesswomen in that. 'Tis pop singers.

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 18:08

I am living proof that some footballers take a fancy to some rather not so flashy looking women too.

giddykipper · 29/09/2009 18:12

When asked what he would have been if not a footballer, Peter Crouch responded "a virgin".

GeekIsGood · 29/09/2009 18:14

Well you have clearly pulled a better class of footballer than the ones UQD is referring to Mamazon!

Fleecy · 29/09/2009 18:22

Didn't Michael Owen's wife work in call centre or admin for MBNA when they married? I knew someone who worked there and they said she stayed until they had their first child.

I think they were childhood sweethearts?

Anyway, they seem quite nice and not too attention-seeking so presumably, as others have said, it's the ones you hear about that spoil it for the rest!

noddyholder · 29/09/2009 18:32

It doesn't look like a hard life tbh and that is going to be attractive to many women!

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 18:43

not really.
they were obvbviously blind drunk

Parrotcake · 29/09/2009 19:13

I cannot think of a single WAG that i can call attractive ....

moshchops · 29/09/2009 19:23

pasturesnew, Eric Cantona has divorced his teacher wife and is now married to an actress

UnquietDad · 29/09/2009 20:03

parrotcake - surely Cheryl scrubs up well?...

I think noddyholder has probably hit it on the head most squarely so far!!

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2009 20:14

Cheryl Cole, Louise Rednap, and Coleeen Rooney are the only atractive WAGs I can think of.

The others are all as fake as......

Inteligent men can be high earners.(Not many think hedge fund managers out there)

Premier league footballers are high earners.

The woman you are talking about, UnquietDad have more in common with footballers, lots of whom dont' have really high IQs and are often working class.

Have you eer seen a F1 dreier with an ugly girl firens or wife?

pasturesnew · 30/09/2009 10:05

oh boo Eric Cantona. That is disappointing.

Squishabelle · 30/09/2009 10:15

With only one or two notable exceptions arent they all just nightclub pick-ups anyway?

mayorquimby · 30/09/2009 10:19

"It depresses me that "the WAGs" are always the same.

You never get one who is bright and not into fashion and hair extensions etc.

And the media takes it as read that every footballer will have a wife or a girlfriend"

well that's because they're the type of "WAGS" who wll seek out the publicity and also who the press will see out.
i'd wager tha the majority of footballers wives or gf's are from the same background as the footballers themselves and don't seek out the publicity or are simply not interesting to the press.
and then there will also be a good number of footballers who are intelligent and not fashion obsessed.

mayorquimby · 30/09/2009 10:28

**footballers wives who are....

ABetaDad · 30/09/2009 10:29

Rich men attracting pretty women. Its as old as the hills. Go to a place like Russia, go to the Monte Carlo harbour, go to Bond Street in London and it is really obvious how young attractive women hang around rich but usually old, fat and ugly blokes.

It has become a lot more obvious in recent years in the UK as the disparity between rich and poor has grown. At some point some proportion of women who are pretty but poor are going to feel being with a rich bloke who treats her reasonably is preferable to being poor.

What saddens me is how many young girls now see marrying a footballer or becoming famous like a pop star is their only career option. Its is a corrosive thing and to some extent the sexulaisation of our society, the desperation of X factor wanabees and our Pop Culture of celebrity just feeds on that insecurity.

Pinkjenny · 01/10/2009 13:31

Well I for one would love to be a WAG. [vacuous emoticon]

Carrotfly · 01/10/2009 13:37

I know 3 'WAGS' and they look no different from a lot of the other mums at school ....

you never see them in a fleece and tracky bottoms, but thats a good thing isn't it ?

One is married to a high profile husband, but she's very normal. Its a shame they are all tarred with the same brush.

noddyholder · 01/10/2009 14:38

Some days (like today)I think it would be great (washing all over kitchen floor )

Pinkjenny · 01/10/2009 14:48

I always remember Sherri Murphy on MTV Cribs saying someone comes in twice a week to "do my flowers". Oh, how I would love that. Fresh flowers all over the mahoosive house.

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 01/10/2009 14:55

It's part of nature's selection processes. The vacuous glam gold-diggers are hoovered up by footballers so UQD and co don't have to trouble themselves to attract them in their search for a soul mate

UnquietDad · 03/10/2009 01:23

It annoys me when they take hubby's name as well.

Which is odd, because among "normal" people I think that's quite nice, and I was pleased DW wanted to take mine.

But I get irritated that, for example, Louise was always Louise Nurding during her pop career and know we are all expected to call her "Louise Redknapp". It's as if she is wearing the name like a piece of particularly ostentatious bling. Ditto Victoria nee Adams, Cheryl nee Tweedy...
