DS welcome party at 7 months...too late?

We've taken decision not to christen our DS (contentious with MIL to start with!) but will have a welcome/celebration party for him instead (MIL ).
Problem is earliest I can get all immediate family together is when DS is approaching 7 months old. Will this seem ridiculous/too late to people when I send the invites out? Want to do something to celebrate but don't want it to look like I've left it too late!

i just went to a joint one for two cousins. one was 8 months, the other 13 months. it was the only time they could organise it, and have all the grandparents there.
