here

I had to search around to find a link that isn't DM

I think she looks fab

Good on her

OP posts:

"she's not a role model, she's a singer."

That wasn't directed at the OP or any poster in particular, although some of the comments seem to suggest that they think she is.

The cover title on the mag being discussed is 'Icons of our generation' - so she is held up as more than just a singer by a lot of people and that's what I meant.

I'm not offended by the image at all, in fact like a lot of other people have commented - aesthetically it's a well executed picture and very interesting. I like it.

But this conversation was opened with 'A cover girl who isn't size 6?..' so obviuously people are bound to make comments about weight here.

SalmonintheLiffey · 18/02/2009 17:05

That dove ad is interesting! wow.

I'd prefer to quietly notice a few models who are size 12-14 being used from time to time, without MY hearing about it or reading about it. IE, they weren't being used as a stunt of some description. They were booked cos they were gorgeous, by somebody sane enough to realise that a size 12-14 six foot girl is slim.

fattiemumma · 18/02/2009 17:07

teh "she's not a role model she's a singer"
is all very true but do you honestly believe she would be such a household name if she wasn't so rotund and still be willing to wear skintight metallic suits?

i really don't believe she would.

she is as famous for being fat as she is a singer.

I agree with Af in as much as she is on the front page simply so people can point and stare at the fat lady.

but i have a huge amount of respect for a woman who knows that this will happen and still be willing to pose for the cover anyway.
As i said in my first post. if i were asked to pose for a similar cover i would. because people need to realise that there is more than one body shape.
you dont need to be a size stick to be attractive.

SalmonintheLiffey · 18/02/2009 17:08

Anyfucker, I do see your point. But any person who is not perfect would find posing nude embarrassing.

I guess though, Beth Ditto isn't completely naked. She is hiding behind a 'fuck you' armour. If I stood there, butt naked, five foot 2 size 12, nobody would say I was brave or confident or beautiful, they'd just say, what? huh. Blah! meh, and turn the page.

SalmonintheLiffey · 18/02/2009 17:08

Meaning, BD has a 'message' and an 'attitude' to partially hide behind if you see what I mean.

SalmonintheLiffey · 18/02/2009 17:10

Anyfucker, I just read your post 16.47, and I completely agree with you when you say that she buys into the media's obsession with weight by posing nude for the public to gasp at.

That's what I was trying to articulate when I said I felt she was a caricature.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2009 17:16

yup

she is literally as bad as the rest of the body-shape obsessives

it doesn't help to quieten the body-shape mafia by putting your fat body on the front page of a magazine

it just feeds the frenzy even further

I am not saying she should hide herself away, she should continue to wear those outrageous outfits she does when she is performing etc

but it is quite another thing to pose nude, it isn't even realistic as she is just as airbrushed as the sallow-skinned, spotty-faced, cadaveric anorexics that pass for fashion models these days

Stitchwort · 18/02/2009 17:20

Sorry not meant to be flippant but has reminded me of French and Saunders sketch, where French is an artist's model (Rubens style) and is the supermodel of the day as she would have been, Kate Moss comes on and French asks her "what are you, his paint brush!"

The picture actually reminds me of a Rubens painting.

SalmonFromTheLiffey · 18/02/2009 17:22

well, if you see the untouched photo of bd that soupdragon posted a few pages back, nearly as much work went into photo editing this cover photo of BD as rubens put into one of his paintings!!

SalmonFromTheLiffey · 18/02/2009 17:23

that comment was mean of me, because photoediting is not BD's fault, as the dove ad demonstrates.

fattiemumma · 18/02/2009 17:29

precisely AF.

teh media are unwilling to show the middle ground. it has to be one extreme or the other.

mrsruffallo · 18/02/2009 17:33

She's got a fantastic voice and is a very cool lady.
I wouldn't call this picture disgusting.

I imagine she is much cooler than all of you lot going yuck!

fattiemumma · 18/02/2009 17:45

she does have a fantastic attitude towards some things.
not sure i'd want her dating my son though

sassy · 18/02/2009 17:46

Not v likely fattiemum.

She likes the ladies

AnyFucker · 18/02/2009 18:08

yes, she is a carpet muncher

< disclaimer, no offence to carpet munchers >

fattiemumma · 18/02/2009 18:19

even less likely considering my son is only 8.
but you know what i mean.

AitchTwoOh · 18/02/2009 18:48

at carpet muncher.

i really don't htink that icon equals role model. and she is a very good singer, who is rightfully famous for her ability to put on a good show. part of that is her charisma, and her fuck you attitude to people who'd put her down. and part of that is refusing to be treated differently to other performers, whether that be revealing photos or garments. long may she reign.

Desiderata · 18/02/2009 18:53

Ummm, I don't see what's ground-breaking about being fat. Seems to be the norm these days rather than the exception.

jabberwocky · 18/02/2009 18:58

Well, it is certainly an interesting photo.

As far as wanting more normal looking women in ads I am all for it. This was a great ad campaign imo. But I agree with the poster who said that an obese model is no more normal than an anorexic one.

lljkk · 18/02/2009 19:00

I don't care about her fat, but I really don't like her hair and lipstick.

(Is that allowed, or am I being hair-ist?)

AnyFucker · 18/02/2009 19:53

aitchTwoOh

whats with the

it was a light-hearted comment

AitchTwoOh · 18/02/2009 20:45

if you don't know by your age, anyfucker, i'm not going to educate you now.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2009 20:49

oh lighten up

< sticks tongue out in childish fashion >

at my age?

are you my granny?

< goes to naughty step >

AitchTwoOh · 18/02/2009 21:00

oh yes... lighten up. right. my problem, i'm sure.

southeastastra · 18/02/2009 21:02

i care about her fat, but the make up really bothers me. is her stylist a gay man?
