Never have I ever felt more inadequate as a mother than…

Sewing cubs badges onto a jumper. My mum will be turning in her grave watching me try to do this. Does every child’s jumper secretly look like the badges were sewed on by a pigeon??

May I suggest Guttermaan fabric glue?

You're welcome 😁

Ali2710 · Yesterday 21:08

Just buy some fabric glue! I spent hours sewing in the first badges my son got at beavers. Life's too short! 😂

3luckystars · Yesterday 21:08

I also glued them on and use glue tape on hems.

molifly · Yesterday 21:09

Oh my god, two hours of my life wasted!! Why did I not think of fabric glue???? You are all genius!

Just don’t sew through the whole sleeve like I did 😂

I tried to use colour coordinated thread to try and hide some of the random sewing (and then got DS to sew his own badges)

I can’t have been too horrendous though as some parents asked me to do their DC’s badges.

It's Gutermaan 'HT2' glue you need, proper fabric stuff. £10 on Amazon.

Enjoy! Some may come off, but you just glue them back on in a few seconds

sittingonabeach · Yesterday 21:11

You are meant to transfer some badges through the sections (not sure how fabric glue works in that situation)

itsmeitsyou · Yesterday 21:12

Practice OP.
DD1 was aked if she did them 😩
DD2 just about to start guides, I colour code them now! 😅

FionnulaTheCooler · Yesterday 21:13

I felt the same trying to sew the ribbons and elastics onto DD's pointe shoes. Made a right arse of it. I wish you could just pay extra to get it done in the shop when they get fitted.

And some are staged, so stage 1 has to come off the uniform (and be transferred onto their camp blankets) to make space for stage 2. Same with their year badges.

Keep practicing @molifly

Haha I did the same with my daughter’s uniform whilst sewing on a button…never touched a needle and cotton ever again!

Yup, plus you can reuse the uniform for younger siblings/pass it on second hand.

I am by no means an accomplished sewer (sewist??) but actually really like the slow repetitiveness of putting badges on. Once you get the knack it's not hard and it's nice to do in an evening in front of the TV. 30+ years in Guiding for me, and two DSs in Scouting means I've had plenty of practice! My camp blanket is my pride and joy!

Same. And sometimes I think I've done a good job only to wash the jumper to have them slightly coming away. My late Mum would find it hilarious whilst being supportive. And then probably secretly resew them. I have used hemming web for tricky ones

Sherunswithwolves · Yesterday 21:41

Zigzag stitch on a sewing machine also works. My efforts are always slightly cock-eyed, although that's because I'm usually still sewing ten minutes after we're supposed to have left for whatever event he's due at...

That blanket is beautiful, @SockQueen.

Prekoc2 · Yesterday 21:46

Sort of comforted by this. I am absolutely hopeless at sewing, and hate it, but I think even I could cope with sewing on a badge.

Angelou79 · Yesterday 21:47

My dad always said the first badge beavers & brownies should get is a sewing badge so they can do it themselves!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Today 06:50

That’s a beautiful camo blanket @SockQueen

Pootles34 · Today 07:34

I thought this until dd started cadets, with a lined No1 jacket. There's always lower to sink.

Sunbringer · Today 09:23

Get a machine. Makes sewing whiz easy. You can even get tiny portable ones for £20. Just practice on scrap first. I went from never using a machine (a full size one) to making trousers in 3 hours… just don’t ask me to make men’s trousers (the crotch defeats my skills).
