What do you get called by friends of your child?

What does your small child's friends call you?

My DD6 always calls her friends parents Mr or Mrs Surname. One of her friends called me by my first name. DD6 thought this was very rude and said so.

I've never instructed her that I can recall to say Mr/Mrs Surname!

What happens in your world?

Strict 😆

"Dd's mum" usually. I have told some of them that they can use my first name, but none of them have yet. They're 8/9

In the 90’s my parents insisted that I call my friends parents Mr and Mrs. We were the only ones who did so as all other children and teenagers that I knew used first names with friends parents including when addressing mine. I hated standing out like that and it always felt awkward so most of the time I would try to avoid talking to them which is way ruder.

My kids friends call me X’s mum if they don’t know me which gives me an opportunity to introduce myself or remind them of my name. If they do know me it is first names with friends I Ms not Mrs and I kept my maiden name on marriage so they never get it right anyway. Even if your daughter’s friends parents are married now that won’t be the case throughout her childhood as she makes new friends. The idea if a child trying to guess an adult’s marital status is a bizarre social situation to navigate and unnecessary when everyone uses first names anyway.

This reminds me of when I used to call my friend's (let's call her Lucy Locket) mother "Mrs Lucy Locket's mum". I now know why she always smiled!

I had forgotten this what we used to say - minus the friend’s surname.

Now adult first names, close friend might be Auntie.

Auntie or Uncle (first name).
If a small child called me by my first name I would correct her/him.

No Mrs either - just “Lucy’s Mum” but directly to the adult.

Encouraged my kids to call my friends Auntie ...... like i had done with my parents' friends. More respectful than using straight first names and less weird than using Ms Mrs etc. I would hate to be Ms JollyTealSwan

RafaFan · Today 18:48

Their friends call me by my first name or nothing at all, they call their friends parents Mr or Mrs, or first name if the parent says it's okay.

My daughter's best friend's parents are both teachers at her school...there is no way she would ever call them by their first names.

Same when I was a child all those eons ago. Next door but one's dad didn't have any nephews or nieces so loved it that I called him Uncle.

Years later DH and I were on holiday in the same area, we called into their hotel to have a drink and he was so chuffed when we called on the phone from reception and I called him Uncle.

Memories of a very dear man, sadly gone, thank you

My kids are in their late 30s but when they were kids it was the norm for them all to address their friends' mum's by their first name. I taught some of them at late primary age, so there was a bit of hovering footing that period, but I reassured them that I was still Sara at home, and Mrs Clara was just for school.

Realistically though, it wasn't often that any of them needed to address me by name, at home.

Lifeislikeaboxofchocolate · Today 18:55

Xxxxx’s mum!

Vegetablespringrolls · Today 18:56

Most of them call me (whichever one of my children they are friends with)'s mum. I always used to find it a bit amusing that one of my friend's had a child who was friends with dc1 and their brother was friends with dc2. So one of them calls me dc1's mum and the other one calls me dc2's mum. They have an older brother who isn't the same age as any of my dc so he is never sure what to call me.

XenaSharples · Today 18:56

Ucle/Auntie for very close family friends until they're past 8 or 9. Then first name. I think Your Majesty would do.

I've had this discussion with friends from various backgrounds.
The Chinese & Indian sub-continent friends both use Auntie/Uncle, but they didn't know it's the usual form of address in England for the friends of their parents.

Zanatdy · Today 19:00

First name of child's name’s mummy. I never minded which. If they ever did call me Mrs (child’s surname) I always said you can me Zanatdy. As that wasn’t my name anyway as have a different surname name to my children.

I’ve got five 15 year old lads in my house as we speak, 3 of them call me by my first name and the other two are my son and his best friend and they call me ‘Gerty’ and have done for years with absolutely no explanation why!

I grew up in Denmark and it was firstname for everyone. I taught my childrens friends that too. They all bar one call me by my first name. Ds best friend calls me mum. Its a inside joke but its stuck.

MisiSam · Today 19:06

If i have know them along time like before school they call.me my name. My school ages kids are 5 and 7. Their school friends call me "child's names mum"

JustMeAndTheFish · Today 19:07

My kids friends have always called me by my first name (they are all adults now). Back in the day we were expected to call my parents’ friends aunty and uncle; which now feels very weird.

Really? I would it really weird if someone unrelated told my dc to address them as auntie/uncle. They don’t even address their actual aunts and uncles using aunt/uncle. First names only.

Is that an English thing, to call unrelated adults aunt/uncle? I know it is common in some Asian and African cultures but I didn’t but didn’t think it was usual in Europe outside those communities.

Surroundedbyfools · Today 19:12
