What do you get called by friends of your child?

What does your small child's friends call you?

My DD6 always calls her friends parents Mr or Mrs Surname. One of her friends called me by my first name. DD6 thought this was very rude and said so.

I've never instructed her that I can recall to say Mr/Mrs Surname!

What happens in your world?

No, you don't. You'd have the kids' actual mothers wanting a quiet word or simply declining future playdates if you did. Are you claiming that even if your friend is sitting next to you drinking coffee, you expect her daughter to address you as Mummy?

I know same here. That’s why it is rude to say Mrs X now. They may not be married, they may not use their DH’s name. It’s just a minefield. We live in a first name world nowadays.

To be honest, the only women I know who go by Mrs are my parents generation so in their 80's. All my peers use Ms or Dr.

It's always been my first name.

Namechangewegovyjune26 · Today 01:06

If I know them well, my first name.

the ones from school call me “XXX’s mum” which is fine ☺️

Mrs / Mr X is quite formal and I’d have a chat with DD that actually she was quite rude to bring it up like that!!

I was born in 1969 so I’m 57. As a child I was taught to call a friend’s parents Mr or Mrs unless told otherwise. I had my second child at 42 so I’ve currently got a 15 year old. 15 year old’s friends call me by my first name or “Joe’s mum”. I wouldn’t dream of expecting formality from them and I’m happy for them to use my name. My first child is 28 and I was happy for her friends to call me by my name. Things have moved on!

cantbebothered101 · Today 17:53

First name….what century are we living in!

maxslice · Today 17:58

The children either call me by my first name or by Ms. Linda. Mr. or Mrs. is for strangers.

Soannoyingititchessobad · Today 18:01

By my first name. Then they ask me how I am because I’ve always asked how they are. This was from the age of 15/16 and they still do it now aged 18/19

Livpool · Today 18:03

xxxx’s mum

Livpool · Today 18:04

I’d be happy for them to call me by my first name though

bobiwien · Today 18:05

Was always x’s mum, now they’re shifting to calling me my first name. It’s actually jarring

ShowOfHands · Today 18:07

MotherMySurname.

DD's friends started it but ds's friends have continued it.

Fupoffyagrasshole · Today 18:09

childs names mummy here too

Mummypie21 · Today 18:10

My best friends' children who are also friends with mine call me Aunty. His school friend either call me by my first name or xxx's mum.

Psst1980 · Today 18:11

First name. I work with children of all ages in schools (not a teacher) and I’m first name for those children I work with too.

EmeraldDreams73 · Today 18:11

First name, but then I also ask all my piano pupils to call me my first name too.

Zero issues with disrespectful behaviour from any of them, by the way.

ETA: as they all got to teens/adulthood, I also get Mumma [surname] as well. Entirely their choice!

IsItSnowing · Today 18:14

I almost always ask people, children included, to use my first name. It's my name and I don't think it's rude for people to use it. I don't want to be called Mrs IsItSnowing by children. I get that some people think it's more polite but it's very formal especially for children. If a parent really wanted them to use Mrs, I'd go along with it but not for my own benefit.
I draw the line at 'Aunty ...', apart from the 4 children to whom it actually applies. If I'm not their aunty, I find it a bit creepy to be honest.

Stompythedinosaur · Today 18:14

Kids use my first name. I don't think that's rude at all!

smaragda · Today 18:18

My kids are early twenties now, but their friend group has called me Mrs Mom since they were all in their teens.

Melancholyflower · Today 18:21

Mine are grown up now, but it was always first names. Yes, children, including mine, might have said Daniel’s mum when referring to them, especially if they didn’t know her actual name, but all of the children addressed parents by first names if they knew them. I don’t think it would ever have occurred to them to call anyone, except teachers, by Mrs etc.

Dandeloosha · Today 18:21

First name, though my friends are all in their 50s and we all still address each others parents (all well into their 70s and 80s now) and Mr Surname and Mrs Surname.

Vitrolinsanity · Today 18:21

DS was first gen Peppa Pig, all the kids called mums [DS name’s]mummy.

They’re all early 20’s now, so it’s just “Yo, Vit”

Walker1178 · Today 18:22

DS is 21 and has had the same friend since reception year at school. I have the same first name as his mum so he definitely knows it but will still always call me DC’s mum!

Swissmeringue · Today 18:26

First name or (insert kids name here's) mum. I don't know any parents of my generation who go by Mr/Mrs surname with the kids.
