What do you get called by friends of your child?

What does your small child's friends call you?

My DD6 always calls her friends parents Mr or Mrs Surname. One of her friends called me by my first name. DD6 thought this was very rude and said so.

I've never instructed her that I can recall to say Mr/Mrs Surname!

What happens in your world?

First name or X's mum

BugJuice · Yesterday 22:32

First name.

Wheesht2 · Yesterday 22:37

We always said Mrs … or very close Auntie.

Times have moved on but I taught my own children to call older neighbours by Mrs, Mr as they would expect.

First name.

Or “X’s mum”

Tbh calling people Mr and Mrs is very inappropriate as she has no idea if they are 'Mrs'

I am married and detest being called Mrs and always immediately asked to be called my proper name

DCs friends have either called me 'xx's mum' or my actual name.

I always called my mums friends by their name ie Ann,Claire and that was 50 years ago! My children did the same. Cannot imagine saying Mrs etc unless it was the headteacher!

It would never occur to my children to call their friends’ mums Mrs. If it’s someone I’m close to and have known my kids since young, then it’s auntie, if it’s not then first name.

OldUserNewNameNow · Yesterday 22:50

Mine call me my-daughters-name’ mummy in primary

secondary - yet to find out!

EerieDemeanour · Yesterday 22:52

Mine are adults now but it was always first names or X's mum. I'd have hated Mrs Surname, I've alway used Ms but avoid title surname as much as possible.

We always called my parents friends by their first names in the 70s but tended to say X's mum or avoid saying a name for friends parents. Was never allowed to say Aunty for anyone who wasn't.

Being married does not necessarily mean they are Mrs. I’m married. I use Ms. My surname is also different to that of my dc.

I’m in my 60’s and my dc are all adults. Their friends all called me by my first name. I think it’s weird that kids are addressing friends’ parents as Mr/Mrs/Ms/Miss whatever in this day and age.

EerieDemeanour · Yesterday 23:08

Yes it's rude to assume that married means Mrs. Men have it easier with all using Mr.

FabulousWealthyTart · Yesterday 23:18

Ma'am with a curtsey😁

I know same here. That’s why it is rude to say Mrs X now. They may not be married, they may not use their DH’s name. It’s just a minefield. We live in a first name world nowadays.

FruAashild · Yesterday 23:25

I called my friend's parents by their first name in the 70 so never thought my kid's friends should use anything else but my first name. I never use DH's surname and have a PhD so always use Dr when I'm asked for a title so Mrs DH's surname would be very wrong and have me looking for my MIL.

DD’s friends call me by my first name. When she was in the younger year groups at primary school and at nursery, they tended to call me “[DD’s name]’s mummy/mum”.

I called my friends’ parents Auntie/Uncle followed by their first name, we did this from me being very young. During my secondary school years, I tried as hard as I could to avoid using their names, as I felt very awkward saying Auntie/Uncle by that stage.

TwoYearsTooMany · Today 00:11

A lot of teens avoid using names for their friends' parents out of awkwardness and only speak when spoken to and to say "thanks for the lift" 🤣

I found there was an age related evolution from "[DC]'s Mummy" from some very little ones, through first name throughout most of school age, to a phase of Ms Surname at sixth form age (mainly from the boys- and we lived abroad where there hasn't been a Ms/Miss/Mrs distinction since the 1960s, all women, even very young women, are addressed by what used to be Mrs and is now essentially equivalent to Ms), slowly reverting back to first name.

I don't like being called Mrs TooMany, it actually feels oddly patronising although that makes no real sense! I'd prefer everyone use first names.

Well, I’m married and I’ve never used ‘Mrs’ in my life!

All DS’s friends have called me by my first name since they got past the toddler ‘X’s mummy’ stage.

But why would children who aren’t yours address you as though they were? Why can’t they just call you Jessica?

No, I think that’s a deeply weird idea. They know I’m not their mother. They call me by my first name.

Jessica was an example! By your actual name!

I mean, would you address your friends’ parents as ‘Mummy’?
