What do you miss from your past?

My algorithms seem to have been showing a lot of 80s and 90s nostalgia recently and it's really got me wishing for times gone by.

What do you miss from your past? (not people). For me it's:

  • Cheery Christmases with carols, excitement, feeling the Christmas stocking in the dark etc.
  • Walkmans
  • Casette tapes and recording the top 10 to listen to the car
  • Less choice in supermarkets, for holidays, tv channels/services, cars etc - so much easier
  • Less plastic tat
  • Technology that I could keep up with as it was all new and so simple
  • Feeling joy at the simple stuff like Body Shop bath pearls
  • Jelly and ice cream
  • Less unhealthy food
  • triangle crisps (I don't even know what they were called)
  • VHS
  • People being nice to each other as the norm
  • Less red tape and measurement of everything we ever do
  • Common sense
  • Work ethic being the norm

The way music was more universal. You don't get big famous bands like Fleetwood Mac or Queen any more. If there is still a top 40 on a Sunday evening no one listens to it. No one knows who's number one.

The freedom of childhood
Going out to play
Listening to 70s/80s music
Not having to think about work beyond it being a grown ups thing far removed at the age of 10.
Nostalgia is a big thing as I get older.

My 21 year old daughter, gone almost 2 years now.

So sorry for your loss 💐

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/10/2026 14:37

Silk cut blue, wherever I felt the urge.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/10/2026 14:39

The excitement of collecting my photos and depending on what it was usually meeting up with a friend after to go through them together.

Love 💔

I saw Transvision Vamp two nights ago...I'm good on the nostalgia front for now 🤣

I miss being able to put anything into my body without any ongoing effects though 😢

I’ve been doing my Christmas shopping early as I’m having surgery early December. All online as locally all the shops have gone. The only big stores we have are primark, newlook, b&m and Poundland lol. I really miss going out bundled up in my scarf and coat to town to mooch around all the shops (i especially miss Woolworths and their pick and mix treat for when I get home). Stopping in a cafe for a brew. Bumping into someone you know. Having a moan about the weather as you waited for the bus home with all your bags. The general buzz as Christmas is soon. Excited kiddies out with parents queuing to see Santa. It’s just so drab now

Echobelly · 26/10/2026 14:13

The excitement of seeing what big films would be on telly at Christmas
Getting into to an indie gig in Camden got fit few quid
Home-made fanzines
Optimism
London being cool for 5 minutes
Affordable housing and energy

Smoking 😳

That was my first thought too Blush

I know my health and wealth are much better without It but my god I miss it. On the odd occasion I give in and have one I realise actually they’re vile, and I’m looking at them with rose tinted glasses.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 26/10/2026 14:17

The sense of endless possibility at university in my late teens/early 20s and the sheer hedonism of the mid 1990s. A relatively stable and optimistic political backdrop. My parents and grandparents.

SharpWriter · 26/10/2026 14:17

Magazines being delivered. The excitement of coming downstairs on a Wednesday morning and seeing my Just Seventeen poking out of my mum's Daily Telegraph on the doormat.

Skybluecoat · 26/10/2026 14:23

My pert breasts.

Being able to drink copious amounts of alcohol.

I feel the same. If I get to 85 I might restart. But only if they bring back menthols. I’m ringing in my 85th with a pack of menthol slims and bottle of cremant

Clubbing - dancing for hours ( and being thin)

Cookingandfoldingthings · 26/10/2026 21:03

Lots of sex, with a variety of people.
(Oh how life changes!)

And freedom from electronic devices, social media, photographs and tracking.

I miss being young with so much of my life ahead of me. Now it's the other way around!

Me too -

Me too -

Look at the positive of getting older as I'm sure we've all had friends and family that didn't get the privilege.

  • You get to be cantankerous and don't care who knows it.😁

LoudPlumDog · 25/10/2026 04:37

Thank you so much, I’m glad you aren’t in the club that no one wants to be in. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

I’m so sorry - puts it all into perspective -

My youth and the power in just being young

Lisanne55 · 26/10/2026 22:33

Music
Being spontaneous
No social media

Cactusandmarshmallows · 26/10/2026 22:33

It’s odd but I miss early social media where I could see what people were up to and their regular photos before it was all ads and reels and filtered content

ChocolateCinderToffee · 26/10/2026 22:41

Cadbury’s chocolate
Being able to hear
Having loads of friends

LoveYouTomorrow · 26/10/2026 22:57

Coming home from a club after dancing like a loon all night with my best friend, stinking to high heaven of cigerette smoke and probably a bicardi breezer spillage; sitting on my parents kitchen floor with the toaster next to us (we’d get the extension lead from under the stairs) and toast and scoff an entire loaf with butter at 3am.

My mum would huff & puff about the crumbs, butter grease on her lino and that we had eaten the good weekend bread. And why had she tripped over the extension lead when she has told us UMPTEETH times to put it away?

I think of those endless nights with no real responsibilities and give thanks that I so enjoyed them!
