What do you miss from your past?

My algorithms seem to have been showing a lot of 80s and 90s nostalgia recently and it's really got me wishing for times gone by.

What do you miss from your past? (not people). For me it's:

  • Cheery Christmases with carols, excitement, feeling the Christmas stocking in the dark etc.
  • Walkmans
  • Casette tapes and recording the top 10 to listen to the car
  • Less choice in supermarkets, for holidays, tv channels/services, cars etc - so much easier
  • Less plastic tat
  • Technology that I could keep up with as it was all new and so simple
  • Feeling joy at the simple stuff like Body Shop bath pearls
  • Jelly and ice cream
  • Less unhealthy food
  • triangle crisps (I don't even know what they were called)
  • VHS
  • People being nice to each other as the norm
  • Less red tape and measurement of everything we ever do
  • Common sense
  • Work ethic being the norm

Going to Northern Soul nights and dancing for hours.
Moved abroad many years ago and we don’t have that sort of thing here.

My youth
Privacy and total freedom - not being tracked via cctv, ring cameras and google!

My 21 year old daughter, gone almost 2 years now.

Going in town and the shops being full of clothes I want to try on.
Choosing chocolate or sweets, everything used to look so much more appetising when foil wrapped and tasted so much nicer.
My Mum’s roast every Sunday.
Getting dressed up and being excited about going out - who would we meet, where would we end up?
90’s and early 00’s music

I’m so sorry for your loss. As a mother I can’t imagine what you’re going through.

Shit 80s Xmas decs, no mobile phones, recording the charts on a cassette, dewberry spray, bigger chocolate bars, going out for a night out with a tenner and coming back with change. Life was so much better then

My waistline!

StepawayfromtheLindors · 24/10/2026 16:54

Having thighs that didn’t rub together when I walked
Feeling immortal
Making life choices without a care in the world
Sleeping nine hours unbroken
Not knowing that bad things can happen in life
Eating a massive bar of Dairy Milk on a regular basis

Globules · 24/10/2026 16:54

I miss people who didn't hold a screen.

And Slapperdays.

SerendipityCat · 24/10/2026 16:55

Couple of things already mentioned that I’m going to put together - happily smoking on the top deck of the bus home from Leeds, listening on my Walkman to the cassette compilations I’d painstakingly put together, usually reading a fat paperback. On a snowy winter evening the commute could easily take well over an hour, but I was warm, had entertainment and my fags, so I was happy enough.
I was living with my widowed mum at the time, and she’d always have my tea ready. I really miss that as well.

What were slapperdays?

LittleWeirdo · 24/10/2026 16:57

My parents

Thingsthatgo · 24/10/2026 17:00

My best friend and I dancing together every Monday at the rock and grunge night at one of the only nightclubs in town. It was always packed, the music was amazing and we would dance for hours in our DM boots.

SaltNVinegarRyvita · 24/10/2026 17:00

Living life untrackable, unobserved and in privacy
once you left home there was no saying where you’d go and when you’d be back (and no one would worry either!)

pilates · 24/10/2026 17:00

Loads op 😔

Life was simpler and people appeared happier.

I miss being young with so much of my life ahead of me. Now it's the other way around!

ShanghaiDiva · 24/10/2026 17:04

I miss a world where we had three/four tv channels and didn’t have information 24/7.
