What’s the most amount of money someone has let you borrow from them and what’s the most you have ever loaned?
I’ll go first- I borrowed 10k for 30day from my mum
I have loaned my parents 30k for 3months.

just thought it would be an interesting conversation as I know A LOT of people are against loaning/borrowing money from family/friends

I haven’t borrowed significant amounts of money from anyone. Why would you need £10k for 30 days? Why would you lend someone £30k for 3 months? How on earth did they pay you back? Who even has that kind of money lying around to lend?!

I have borrowed valuable items from people. E.g. DB and SIL lent me various baby items for long term loan and a travel pram for short term loan.

Taking money from a SIPP can take a month for example. I know when I do my mums it takes that long.

If you have funds tied up (like I did) when I wanted to buy my house, you might need to borrow £10k for a month or two so that the sale doesn’t delay or fall through while you wait for the funds to come in.

I borrowed £750 off my sister when my cat got hit by a car and needed an operation. I paid her back over three months. I loaned her years later £1200 as she needed to pay her health insurance that covered her disabled DD and was short - she paid me back promptly.
I gave a friend £1000 when she was launching her business. It was framed as a loan but I knew I was unlikely to get it back. Every blue moon she says something like ‘I should be doing pretty well next year and can give you your money back’ but she’s said that the last three years (and is actually doing ok but I know what it’s like - there’s always another bill waiting). I had a friend who had a breakdown and she’d ask me to buy her cigarettes, cover the odd bill etc and I did as she was in a had way (sectioned a couple times) - it added up over time and she’d always say ‘you know I’m good for it’ but she never did pay me back and now I’m NC with her for various reasons.
ive been short a few times and I’ve sold something rather than borrow from anyone (other than the cat thing).

Luckily (I guess) I’ve never been in the position to borrow or lend large sums of money.
I’m not a home owner and if I don’t have enough for what I need then I don’t have it or wait until I do.

Zero. I've always lived by a rule that if I can't pay for it myself, I don't have it.

But in both these situations the money was there just not accessible. My rule is if I can’t pay for something or I don’t have double the money I can’t afford it. Like when I gave my parents the 30k I wouldn’t have done that if all I had was 30k

Same here if I can't afford it I can't have it simple 🤷 same reason I don't have a credit card

Doesn’t work like that when a family member is going to lose their home or car. I’d rather lose the money than ever stare a loved one in the face and say I wouldn’t help. Imagine being so cruel and miserly.

I borrowed £5 from my mum decades ago. Paid her back.

I lent £30k to my son 10 years ago. All paid back. 👍

I borrowed 10k from my parents for about as week to allow me to max out my ISA payments. The timing of my bonus was a bit off.

Just leant my parents 35k so they can pay their mortgage off. Hopefully get that back over three years but I'm prepared for it to be a gift if need be.

BugJuice · 25/10/2026 07:49

£35k for a house deposit, paid it back over 5 years.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 25/10/2026 08:13

I have lent money twice, both times to my PAs at work. The first was £3k over 30 years ago which I almost didn’t get back as on the date repayment was due, her husband punched someone at work and lost his job. Anyway I didn’t learn from that experience, repeated and a very similar scenario. I haven’t lent since and wouldn’t unless I could afford to lose the money.

DilemmaDelilah · 25/10/2026 08:58

I've never borrowed money, except for my mortgage. Not even on a credit card. I've never had car finance either.

I did lend my sister £6000 once.
