What’s the most amount of money someone has let you borrow from them and what’s the most you have ever loaned?
I’ll go first- I borrowed 10k for 30day from my mum
I have loaned my parents 30k for 3months.

just thought it would be an interesting conversation as I know A LOT of people are against loaning/borrowing money from family/friends

Doesn’t work like that when a family member is going to lose their home or car. I’d rather lose the money than ever stare a loved one in the face and say I wouldn’t help. Imagine being so cruel and miserly.

Au contraire, she regularly gave to people in need. It was the situation of being in debt, or indebted to she had an issue with.

Back in the 1960s I moved from my parents house into an unfurnished flat and asked my gran if she would loan me £200. That was a lot of money back then. Worth about £6000 now. I made a list of all the things I thought i would need and the approximate prices for them,. I also showed her how I planned to pay it back in monthly instalments. She offered it to me as a gift but I said I would prefer to call it a loan. Each payday the first thing I did was to transfer the agreed payment to her account. I would have felt uncomfortable spending money on myself until I had paid the loan money. After I paid back half she refused to accept any more and told me she would be angry if I tried to sneak it into her bank account. One did not argue with my grandmother. However she did enjoy coming with me when I went shopping for furniture although we obviously had very different tastes. Although she would not accept any more money I did take her out for some nice lunches while we were shopping.

I’ve never borrowed or lent money, I have gifted money to my child, but never borrowed or loaned any

JudyTeeny · 24/10/2026 12:34

I've never borrowed a large amount.
We lent my SIL and her husband £2,000 to be able to get their house. It took them ages to repay, as they're CFs of the first order.

Walker1178 · 24/10/2026 12:39

I borrowed £3k from my sister for 2 days (Needed to get a new car but the insurance payment for the old had not quite cleared). Loan probably less than £500 and it would have been family but we’re really not type to be in and out of each others pockets.

Ucouldntmakeitupdear · 24/10/2026 12:40

I have lent £500-3000 to my children at times over the years .
I lent a friend £100 a couple of years ago. She paid me back £10 a month which was all good 👍

jmh740 · 24/10/2026 12:41

My dad bought me a car for 10k im his carer and my car died. He told my siblings to take if from my inheritance when he goes.
I had been looking at cars for 5k but he insisted I get something newer.
I am grateful but its not the car i would have chosen and feel obligated to drive him anywhere he wants to go now. Id have been happier just borrowing 5k

I haven’t borrowed significant amounts of money from anyone. Why would you need £10k for 30 days? Why would you lend someone £30k for 3 months? How on earth did they pay you back? Who even has that kind of money lying around to lend?!

I have borrowed valuable items from people. E.g. DB and SIL lent me various baby items for long term loan and a travel pram for short term loan.

I had 10k that in an account that needed 30days to be released so it was a temporary thing.
Same with the 30k…they were waiting on the money coming from somewhere else but needed it. So again it was temporary.

Plenty of people have savings.

Genuine question … what was it you desperately needed to buy 30 days in advance of your funds being released?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with borrowing money per se but I think I’d just have waited (but tbf, as explained, I’m not a big borrower and don’t have many people in my life who I think would be able to lend me that kind of money.)

I borrowed from an ex boyfriend who was already an ex at the time £1000 40 years ago. It was a lot for me and I was in a bit if a pickle. I went to pay him back 3 years later and told me it was a gift and don't worry. We are still friends to thus day. I occasionally mention if he wants it back and he just says that he was more than happy to help me when i needed it.

I lent £400 8 months ago to a young woman im friendly with . She is single and on UC. She was in a bit of a problem . I gave and didnt expect it back. She repaid within 6 months in 2x 200 despite me saying it was fine and not to worry.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/10/2026 14:52

Borrowed - nothing that I can recall
Loaned - £ 1,500 to DB struggling with cc overspending and repayments. He paid it back in full.

Spidey66 · 24/10/2026 20:01

Aside from my mortgage….2k from my mum when I ran up credit card/ overdraft debt. That was 20 years back, repaid £100pm.

I don’t think I’ve lent any significant amount to anyone, just never been asked.

Fieldday26 · 24/10/2026 20:07

Borrowed £8k off my Dad when we were a real financial mess and our car was going to be repossessed but I had £30k redundancy payment due about 6 weeks later. The really allowed us to completely turn our finances around.

Lent £3k to my DS to pay his insurance off in one go and repay over a couple of months. This meant he didn’t pay interest and could then save monthly to be able to pay the following year in full as well.

StayCoolLikeAPenguin · 24/10/2026 20:08

I've never borrowed anything that I can remember. I lent my brother £1000. Didn't get it back.

Tinycar · 24/10/2026 20:15

Never borrowed. Never lent.

My parents did gift me money a few times when I was in my 20s though

DH lent money to his brother who claimed money was tight and then his brother kept posting about things like weekends away and theatre trips on social media when he still hadnt paid DH back

naffogato · 24/10/2026 20:28

I borrowed £200k from my uncle so we could buy the house we wanted when our house sale fell through. Paid him back within a month.

Lent £4k to a friend who had been made redundant. Paid back within a couple of months.

Zero. I've always lived by a rule that if I can't pay for it myself, I don't have it.

CuteHANDBAG · 25/10/2026 00:58

We’ve ‘loaned’ about £60k to my DHs brother and wife. They came to use to ask for money and promised to pay it back. They haven’t but they’ve since been on multiple holidays etc. They really are scum. I hate them. They pretend to be nice respectful people but they aren’t.
It might be better if they at least talked to us about it.
I love my husband dearly but he is so dumb with things like this.
luckily we can afford it but it’s money I’d rather give to anyone else but them.

HeddaGarbled · 25/10/2026 01:01

I owe gardening club 53p because I didn’t have enough change for tea break last month.

Summer26woohoo · 25/10/2026 01:12

I borrowed £10k from my sister for 3 days.

I was standing in a car dealership, phone in hand, waiting to make a payment. Nipped onto my Monzo app to move the money from my savings to my current account and got a pop up telling me it was a three day notice account 😱 I'd not even realised and no other instant access money at all.

Had a moment of complete panic...I'd just travelled to the car place on a train which had taken 5 hours and imagined having to go home the same way. Luckily my sister bailed me out!

Bloody hell how do they justify it? Or is your dh not up to challenging them ?

Lizzieregina · 25/10/2026 01:18

Loaned $80k to my daughter for graduate school. She has repaid every penny.

Don’t think I’ve ever borrowed any.
