What’s the most amount of money someone has let you borrow from them and what’s the most you have ever loaned?
I’ll go first- I borrowed 10k for 30day from my mum
I have loaned my parents 30k for 3months.

just thought it would be an interesting conversation as I know A LOT of people are against loaning/borrowing money from family/friends

10k from my parents to put with my house deposit for a couple of months whilst I waited for it to come in from elsewhere.

I don’t lend money usually because it isn’t worth the risk, but once I gave my cousin a couple of hundred for the weekend before he got paid.

I've never borrowed money from anyone- not that I can ever recall 🤔

20yrs ago a 'friend' borrowed £100 and never paid it back. I've never been asked by anything since.

TorroFerney · 24/10/2026 11:15

Never borrowed anything. I think I may have lent a friend £50 30 years ago , it may have not been that much. No one has since then ever asked to borrow anything but theyve no idea of my financial situation so does that make a difference?

PDAblues · 24/10/2026 11:15

Maybe £20 from my children when I didn't have enough to pay the hairdresser (she comes to our house).

Minasama · 24/10/2026 11:15

Nothing. I offered a bridge loan of up to £100K to my parents if they needed any float when selling their house, but everything aligned and they didn’t.

I have never borrowed and I would never lend except to my parents and sister.

Munchie1965 · 24/10/2026 11:16

Never borrowed any money.

TheMoanerLisa · 24/10/2026 11:18

The most I have ever borrowed is probably a couple of quid for a bus fare when I lost my cash point card - long before the days of paying with your phone.

The most I have ever loaned is £165,000 to my sister so that she could buy the rental property she was living in.

The most I have ever loaned to a friend was £100 when she was struggling. That Christmas, I wrote off the loan as her Christmas present. She cried buckets.

Neither a borrower or a lender be - as my very wise old granny said.

Kittkats · 24/10/2026 11:22

Borrowed -£20
lent- £600
Both to close family.

Sunbringer · 24/10/2026 11:35

I’ve loaned £1000. Sister. I’ve borrowed about £50 in my teens.

Doesn’t work like that when a family member is going to lose their home or car. I’d rather lose the money than ever stare a loved one in the face and say I wouldn’t help. Imagine being so cruel and miserly.

Fluffybagel · 24/10/2026 11:38

Husband loaned me £12k to buy a car. (Our money is totally separate) the most I’ve ever loaned to someone else must be less than £100 I think! Mum and dad loaned me a few hundred when I still lived at home for car insurance etc!

I would not loan anyone a substantial amount of money. Hubby lent his brother 5k to get him out the sh*t and was not paid back so they no longer talk (his brothers doing) and were very close prior to that!

SillyG · 24/10/2026 11:42

Lots of fortune people on this thread.

Until a few years ago i had never borrowed money from anyone.
I ended up having to take my local authority to tribunal to appeal my dd Ehcplan. I borrowed £11k from my adult dd.

I hated asking but had no other way of getting the money.

Iocanepowder · 24/10/2026 11:44

£200 from my friend, which I paid back in 2 weeks.

TigerRag · 24/10/2026 11:46

I've loaned my parents £1k. Probably €200 when I went away with a friend

Hadalifeonce · 24/10/2026 11:50

I borrowed £15K from my parents, to buy out ExH.

loobylou10 · 24/10/2026 11:54

I loaned my friend and her husband £50k for 6 months when they moved house. Her pension lump sum was not due for 6 months and it saved them having to get a small mortgage. All repaid!

SpottyAlpaca · 24/10/2026 11:55

I have never borrowed a significant sum of money from anyone. My parents are ordinary working class people, struggling to make ends meet, and were never in a position to lend me money.

I did once lend £300 to a family member. This was back in the early 90s, and it was a lot of money to me then. She didn’t pay me back at the agreed time, and when I subsequently asked for it she shrugged & replied “I haven’t got it. What are you going to do about it?”

Needless to say, I never saw a penny of it back. I never spoke to her again, & never will. She approached me in tears many years later at my grandmother’s funeral, and I blanked her with all the contempt I could muster. This caused further bad feeling in the family.

Never, ever lend money to family.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 24/10/2026 12:00

I have lent money to friends numerous times back when I was working.
Mostly got it back except from one person.

Now being retired through ill health and having been ripped off by an ex-husband I am a lot poorer so when I was facing an unexpected crisis a kind friend lent me money, which I then paid back.

It’s a sad thing if nobody helps anyone else.

Veraandacupoftea · 24/10/2026 12:02

2 k from in-laws to replace our boiler when it unexpectedly broke in January (we paid them back £500 per month )

if it wasn’t the middle of winter we would have waited and saved up .

That’s probably the biggest

lent a few friends an odd £50 here and there .

our roof needs replacing desperately and if I had someone to ask the 9k off I would! As it is we are booking it in for summer holidays and crossing fingers it’s still standing!

Iinger · 24/10/2026 12:04

I lent a family member £40,000 for three months…. two and a half years ago 😬

CherryKerry · 24/10/2026 12:07

£10K from my parents for about a week, we were buying a house with 70% equity but wanted £10k on the mortgage cash to fund a new kitchen and bathroom.

For some stupid reason the bank (Halifax) refused to give us the £10K until after we had paid for the kitchen/bathroom which was a bit of a catch-22 situation.

This was 20+ years ago.

Nameshavebeenchangedtoprotect · 24/10/2026 12:09

I lent a friend £800 to by a car that they "needed" to be repaid when her student loan arrived.
She split up with her partner, he took the car and I got £50 back from her.

Neither a borrower or a lender be - as my very wise old granny said.

That's all well and good until you want to buy a house and don't have a spare £250K+ sitting in the bank.

PancakeCloud · 24/10/2026 12:17

I haven’t borrowed significant amounts of money from anyone. Why would you need £10k for 30 days? Why would you lend someone £30k for 3 months? How on earth did they pay you back? Who even has that kind of money lying around to lend?!

I have borrowed valuable items from people. E.g. DB and SIL lent me various baby items for long term loan and a travel pram for short term loan.
