Host requests for Airbnb places.

I saw some information on the net that Airbnb hosts are not allowed to ask guests to do the jobs that they often ask to be done anymore. My point of view has always been I am on holiday, the place will be getting a cleaner in before the next guests arrive so I will do a few things but I am not there due to being a paying guest to do some of the demands owners ask.

We run a holiday let. Our cleaning company asks guests to strip the beds and put all towels in the bath. Also the dishwasher has to be empty and bins too. The turnaround isn't long between guests, especially if cleaning a few properties on changeover days. We've never had any complaints and think these requests are pretty standard

I think what @Madmother63 describes is standard. Stripping beds can be a hit and miss so I only do it when it is somewhere specifically stated.

It takes 15 minutes to wash up breakfast items and take out the rubbish, especially if there is more than one person.

For everything else I would query why I pay a cleaning fee which is now often stated separately.
If anything gets really dirty while I am there like children or adults dragging in dirt from outside, I will remove it as I don't fancy trapping through it myself.

We run an Airbnb and I would never request guests strip the beds or take the bins out. It makes it feel like less of a treat if you have to do the housework at the end! I hate going to places that make me do part of the turnover at the end of the stay.

I have never stripped beds. Wash up and put away in the kitchen and wipe the surfaces, replace any furniture we've moved, put rubbish in bin and that's it.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 21/10/2026 18:36

I would make sure everything dirty goes in the dishwasher and any messes/spills are cleared up as we go but full on housekeeping no

I did once stay in an Airbnb for a friend's tiny wedding (they booked it& we're staying in the master suite) and the morning we left we were scrubbing surfaces and emptying bins and stripping beds and sweeping the floors

I did think it was a bit of a piss take but I wasn't going to say anything to the people who just got married!

Nope, not ok. I want to load items into the dishwasher as I leave in the morning and stripping beds and emptying bins are home chores not holiday chores. This is why ppl are going back to hotels, because holiday let owners forget it’s a holiday.

Not acceptable at all. It's your issue to solve not the customer. You could pay extra for more cleaning hours or an additional cleaner to get things done quicker. I'm on holiday and I'm not sorting out the dishwasher or laundry on your behalf because you want more profit over more cleaning time.

So true

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 21/10/2026 18:50

I'm a cleaner.. recently paid over 1k for a week in a cottage. Having to spend the last hour cleaning took the shine off the trip.

Divebar2021 · 21/10/2026 18:51

No I will leave it neat and tidy - put towels in the bath and the rubbish out but I want to load the dishwasher and leave it running.

boomboombooom · 21/10/2026 18:52

Asking people to strip the beds is ridiculous. People are PAYING to stay there, you’re not doing them a favour.

I put stuff in the dishwasher (or if there’s no dishwasher, I wash up), make sure there’s no obvious dirt anywhere, and that’s it.

Guidanceplease20 · 21/10/2026 18:56

I always strip the beds and if we travel with family they are old enough to do the same. I put all used towels in the shower. Its a short job that saves a cleaner time.

I wash up or put the dishwasher on - i dont necessarily dry everything though.

And i tie the bin bags and put them out if I know where. I dont usually put the bins out mid week as Ive not read the info book!

But I dont clean, hoover or wash the floors etc. I simply do the easy stuff so the cleaners have a nice day and hopefully it keeps check in at a reasonable time.

What is your turnaround time? We usually have to leave a property by 11, and not allowed in until 3 pm. That's 4 hours. Plenty of time to clean surely?

The dishwasher request us ridiculous. Asking for the final washing up to be in the dishwasher and on a cycle is fine but I aint hanging around for it to finish! Ive got to be out anyway!

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 21/10/2026 19:06

We had to be out for 9.30 am !

Simonjt · 21/10/2026 19:09

The only thing we ask is guests use the correct bin for the correct item, so we have labels above each bin.

We prefer guests to leave bedding, if its still on the bed its easier for us to see if any stains need treating before we wash them. Plus its surprising how many pairs of socks and pants and sometimes other items you find tangled in with a pile of bedding.

Actually I guess we kind of ask guests to empty the dishwasher, everything in the kitchen fits in it, so we always put everything in and put it on a cycle after someone has left, so when the next guest arrives everything is clean and dry in the dishwasher. We do say if they want us to empty it to just let us know.

wafflesmgee · 21/10/2026 19:16

It depends how much we have spent. Because we stay on a very tight budget we normally strip beds and clean up eg youth hostels anyway, it’s all relative as to me it’s still less work than camping would be

if I am shelling out more money I clean up and tidy but don’t strip beds/empty dishwasher or bins

Shopgirl1 · 21/10/2026 19:16

I just won’t stay in places with such ridiculous demands. Hotels all the way.

AralVorkosigan · 21/10/2026 19:21

Holiday cottages would suit us better in lots of ways, but we don’t stay in them anymore. I’m not doing the cleaning and laundry on holiday!

Askandyforcompo · 21/10/2026 19:27

I don't ask my guests to do anything at all. However, 99.9% of people wash their dishes or put them in the dishwasher because it's simply bad manners not to

LumpyandBumps · 21/10/2026 19:45

Whilst I am pleased to see some guidelines limiting excessive requests I think hosts should be able to ask guests to wash up or put items in a dishwasher.

The last Airbnb I stayed in only mentioned bins once I arrived. I was expected to unlock a shed, and drag 3 heavy wheelie bins down a 14” step to the path outside and obviously replace once emptied. Maybe not that unreasonable during my stay, but was asked to do it on my first evening there. Not something I wanted to be ‘reminded’ to do after a 30 hour journey there.

I had 2 more ‘reminders’ during my 2 weeks stay.

Amongst other things the checkout instructions reassured me that I didn’t need to wash the bedding - not that I had had any intention of doing that.

I ignored his request to send him a photo of the keys being back in the lock box ( taxi waiting, cases to move, and no data once I left house), and his long explanation of why he felt he should have a 5 star rating.

BestIsWest · 21/10/2026 19:51

The last few times we’ve been away we’ve stayed in hotels. They’ve proved to be cheaper than Airbnb even with breakfast included and we’ve not had to check out until 12pm and no cleaning or emptying bins needed.

gettingolderbutcooler · 21/10/2026 19:51

Many a time we’ve set off back home with the Airbnb rubbish bags squashed into the car with us as we look for a French recycling centre….🤬
Not any more then!
